LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The Lock Haven University men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to host the 2007 NCAA Division II East Region Championships on the Haven’s West Branch Cross Country Course.
Lock Haven Preview:
The Bald Eagles are coming off a third place showing at the 2007 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships and are looking for big things this weekend. The Haven men’s side has won three out of the last four East Region Championships including last fall’s.
Leading the way for the Bald Eagles will be senior Shawn Moore (Elverson, Pa./Twin Valley) and Jed Yeatts (Mercersburg, Pa./James Buchanan) who both earned All-PSAC honors last weekend at Kutztown University.
Moore took 15th with a time of 27:02, while Yeatts covered the 8K course in 27:05 and took 19th.
Bald Eagle rookie Tim Getz (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Srasbury) just missed picking up All-PSAC honors after taking 21st in 27:25 and he will certainly be a big part of the team’s success in tomorrow’s race.
The men ran their best team effort last week, but still have so much more in the tank according to LHU head coach Aaron Russell.
“Shippensburg didn't have a great race and will definitely be challenging us, we need Brandon Pomerantz and Josh Trego to run like they're capable of doing in order to have a chance at a better finish,” Russell said.
“We’ve trained all season for our home course, so they should be confident in what they're capable of running on it. I'd look for co-captain Shawn Moore to step it up again this weekend in what could potentially be his last cross country race in a uniform for The Haven.”
The Lady Eagles are coming off a 10th place showing at last week’s PSAC championships and are looking to make some noise this year on their home course.
Last year the women’s team finished sixth at the PSAC Championships which was three-sport improvement from 2005 before going on to take seventh at the East Region Championships and they would love to see that kind of improvement again this year.
“The women didn't run as well as they're capable of as a whole last weekend,” Russell said. “We’re no longer ranked in the top 10 in our region, but definitely are talented enough to be. Our goal will be to really let everyone know what we're capable of as we end the season.”
Leading the way for the Lady Eagles will be junior Shala Simms (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) who earned All-PSAC honors after placing an impressive sixth overall. She covered the 6K course in 24:10 and her sixth place finish is the best by a Lady Eagle since 1997.
Russell thinks Simms could have huge race this weekend and says she could have an opportunity to earn an individual berth to the NCAA Championships.
“If she runs like she did last weekend, she definitely has the potential to be in the top five,” Russell said. “Our course suits her better than Kutztown's, so hopefully that will give her confidence to go after it.”
The women’s 6K race goes off at 11 a.m. tomorrow with men’s 10K race following at 12:15.
