Youngstown, Ohio – The Lock Haven University Bald Eagles (0-1) started off the 2007-08 season with a loss to the Youngstown State Penguins (2-1) by a 95-55 score at Beeghly Center.
It was the second time in a row that the Bald Eagles took on the mighty Penguins in out of conference action as they dropped last season’s contest by a 70-36 in Youngstown.
The Bald Eagles kept things close early as through the first three and a half minutes of play they trailed Youngstown St. by an 8-4 score.
That would be the closest LHU would get as over the course of the next eight and a half minutes the Penguins would put together a stunning 37-7 run to build a 45-11 lead.
The two teams would head into the locker room with YSU holding a commanding 60-16 lead.
Junior center A.J. Zimmer (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) would lead LHU’s scoring in the first half as he chipped in six points. He got help from classmate and preseason honorable mention All-American Billy Arre (Pittsburgh, Pa/Thomas Jefferson) and senior Denny Mortimer’s (Silver Spring, Md./Mansfield University) three points as well.
Lock Haven would work diligently in the second half to chip into the Penguin lead and would do so by outscoring YSU by a 39-35 margin in the frame, but it wouldn’t be enough to overcome the halftime deficit as they fell 95-55.
The Haven offensive attack would be led by Arre in the second half who scored a dozen in the frame and a team high 15 on the evening. Also in double digits was Mortimer who finished the game with 14 points.
Arre and Mortimer also led the way with six rebounds a piece.
The inside game was the way to go for LHU as they scored 27 of their 55 points in the paint.
Youngstown St. was led by Byron Davis’ game high 19 point performance.
The Penguins were red hot on the evening as they shot a fiery 52% from the field which was hard for LHU to overcome according to Bald Eagle head coach John Wilson.
“We came out cold in the first half and they were on fire and we got down and went into the locker room and regrouped and came out and outscored them in the second half. I’m quite pleased that they responded the way they did” said Wilson of his squads performance.
The Bald Eagles are next back in action tomorrow Saturday, November 17 as they tip off the home part of their schedule by playing host to C.W. Post with the tip scheduled for 7:00 p.m. inside the confines of Thomas Fieldhouse
