INDIANA, Pa. – The Lock Haven University swim team wrapped up competition at the Indiana (Pa.) University Crimson Hawk Invitation today (Saturday, Nov. 17) after a strong showing at the three-day event.
LHU placed fourth overall among some top competition as the Lady Eagles turned in some quite impressive results over the three-day span including numerous conference qualifying marks and all-time top five times.
A big highlight was freshman Amanda Terray (Coaldale, Pa./Panther Valley) qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
Senior captain Kelly Grieneisen (Pittsburgh/Plum) turned in a sensational performance in the 1650 freestyle, finishing 10th overall with a time of 18:44.93. Her time was good enough for PSAC qualifying mark and is the second fastest time ever recorded by a Lady Eagle. Her old sister and former Lady Eagle swimmer Katie Grieneisen owns the school record.
She also went through the 1000 yard mark at 11:20.83, which counts as a legal swim and is the fourth best all-time in Haven history.
Terray was at it again in the 200 backstroke finishing second overall with a time of 2:08.66 marking a LHU school record. The time is also good enough for a NCAA “B” cut time.
Junior Stephanie Kudrick (Coudersport, Pa./Coudersport) hit a PSAC qualifying in the 200 breaststroke prelims. Her time of 2:34.79 was also the third best all-time. She finished sixth overall in the finals.
In the 200 butterfly sophomore Amanda Palmer (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) took sixth with a PSAC qualifying 2:20.70. Fellow classmate Ashley Lightcap (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) took ninth in the same event.
The Lady Eagles finished sixth in the 400 freestyle relay.
Friday: (Terray qualifies for Nationals, smashes school record)
On Friday Freshman Amanda Terray (Coaldale, Pa./Panther Valley) became the first Lady Eagle in the school’s history to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championships today at the Indiana (Pa.) University Crimson Hawk Invitational.
In the prelims of the 100 backstroke Terry was clocked in 58.14, which hit the NCAA “A” cut time qualifying her for the NCAA championships in March in Columbia, Missouri.
Her time of 58.14 also smashed her own school record set earlier this season.
Terray wasn’t done there as she came back in 100 backstroke finals and bettered her mark on her way to a first place finish. Her time of 57.62 smashed her own school record set earlier in the day during the prelims while also establishing a IUP Natatorium record. As of today, the time has her ranked fourth in the nation in all of Division II in the event.
“Tonight’s (Friday, Nov. 16) performance was much more consistent with where Amanda should be time wise,” said LHU head coach Andy Waeger, who says there is still plenty of room to improve. “We are excited to make LHU swimming history this weekend, but in no way are we satisfied with just qualifying for the National Championships, we go there with specific goals including achieve All-American status.
Other Friday highlights included senior Kelly Grieneisen’s (Pittsburgh/Plum) eighth place finish in the 200 freestyle. Earlier in the day in prelims of the same event Grieneisen swam a time of 2:02.16 which is Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying mark.
Junior Stephanie Kudrick (Coudersport, Pa./Coudersport) also qualified for the PSAC Championships in the 100 breast stroke with a time of 1:10.90 in the prelims and came back to take seventh in the finals. Her time of 1:10.90 was an all-time top five performance.
Sophomore Amanda Palmer (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) added her name of the list of LHU’s PSAC qualifiers after hitting the mark in the 400 IM with a time of 4:54.40 in the finals.
“She (Palmer) swam a very gutsy race dropping about four full seconds of her time in the morning prelims,” Waeger commented.
Her time of 4:54.40 was also good for third best in LHU history.
Ashley Lightcap (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) placed 11th in the 100 butterfly with a season best time of 1:56.03 for the sophomore while rookie Ashley Gardner (Smyrna, Del./Dover) finished 16th in the 400 IM.
The Haven’s 200 medley relay team (Terray, Kudrick, Lightcap & Grieneisen) took fourth with a time of 1:56.30 and 800 freestyle relay team (Grieneisen, Terray, Palmer & Lightcap) placed fifth rounding out the Friday competition.
Thursday: (Two all-time top five times and one school record)
The Lady Eagles dove into competition at IUP on Thursday with some strong performances.
Leading the way was freshman Amanda Terray (Coaldale, Pa./Panther Valley) who swam another all-time top five time for the Haven. She took fifth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.05.
Terray’s time of 25.05 is her season best, and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) cut time and is the fifth best ever by a Lady Eagle in the event.
Senior-captain Kelly Grieneisen (Pittsburgh/Plum) turned in a strong showing in the 500 freestyle, placing 15th with a time of 5:30.91. She scored two team points for her 15th place finish.
Sophomore Becky Fontaine (Wantage, N.J./High Point) took 27th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:58.76. Her 27th place showing didn’t score any team points for LHU, but her time of 5:58.76 was a lifetime best.
LHU head coach Andy Waeger was very pleased with Fontaine’s performance in her achieving a personal best and breaking the six minute mark, which is a real accomplishment he says.
Junior Stephanie Kudrick (Coudersport, Pa./Coudersport) took 11th in the 200 IM. Her time of 2:18.82 just missed the PSAC cut time, but is the fourth best ever on LHU’s all-time performance list.
Lock Haven’s 400 medley relay team swam to a fourth place finish. Competing was Terray, Kudrick, sophomore Ashley Lightcap (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) and Grieneisen.
Terry led off in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.63. Her time was just missed the NCAA Division II “A” cut time, missing by only .14 seconds. Terray’s 58.63 did however break the Lock Haven school record for the event.
All and all, Waeger was very happy with his team’s performance in day one as they took on some very talented competition including three Division I schools and PSAC powerhouses Slippery Rock University and IUP.
