BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Lock Haven University men’s basketball team (0-9, 0-0 PSAC West) came up just short on the road in a second half of tonight’s Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader crossover affair as they fell to Bloomsburg University 68-65.
Lock Haven was the first team to get on the board as they took the early 2-0 lead off a Denny Mortimer (Silver Spring, Md./Mansfield University) layup in the opening moments of the contest.
Bloomsburg answered quickly to knot the game up at two a piece but junior preseason All-American Billy Arre (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) would give LHU the lead right back as he buried a jumper to give LHU the 4-2 advantage.
Bloomsburg’s Nick Jones, who LHU played man to man all evening long, knocked down a triple to give Bloom their first lead of the game at 5-4 with 18 and a half minutes to play in the first half.
The next three minutes would see the Huskies go on a 9-0 burst to extend their lead to 14-4 but, The Haven wasn’t going to go away without a fight.
A quick 6-1 run sparked by a Tyrone Palmer (Darby, Pa./Parkway) layup got the Bald Eagles back into the game as they only trailed by five with twelve to play in the first half.
Bloom would add four points to their lead across the remainder of the first stanza as they took a 38-29 lead into the locker room.
LHU was led by Arre’s nine points in the first half and also got big contributions from Kelvin McLean (Newport News, Va./Heritage) for the second night in a row as he chipped in eight points of his own in ten minutes of play.
LHU would come out and play a stellar second half and slowly widdle away at the Husky lead which stood at only two with just under six minutes to play.
Lock Haven cut the lead to one with two and a half to play as Mortimer hit the front end of a pair of free throws, but couldn’t tie the game up as he missed the back end.
Bloom would expand their lead back to as much as five with only a minute left, but Lock Haven wouldn’t quit fighting as they continued to battle to the final buzzer.
With 14 seconds left Justin Wilson (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) would hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead back to one.
Two seconds later Palmer would foul Jason Green, who would hit both shots from the charity stripe, to extend the lead back to three for the Huskies.
Half of Green’s points on the evening came from those two clutch free throws.
The Haven would have one more opportunity in the waning moments as out of a timeout, they would draw up a play to find an open Arre to try to push overtime.
The play worked out as planned as Arre got a look at the hoop but his trey attempt would not find the net, as LHU came up just short in their quest for their first win of the season.
Arre led the way for the Bald Eagles as he poured in a game high 21 points. Mortimer and Palmer also helped the LHU cause as they chipped in a dozen a piece.
Leading the way on the glass was the trio of Arre, Wilson and McLean as they pulled down four boards a piece.
The nine game losing streak to start the season is the worst start to a season for Lock Haven since the 2003-04 campaign when they started 0-10.
LHU will have to wait until after Christmas to get that first win as they are next back in action at the Wheeling Jesuit Tournament on December 29-30. The first game of the tournament sees LHU take on West Liberty State College at 4:00 p.m. at Wheeling Jesuit on December 29.
