LHU Basketball - Men

Bald Eagles fall on the road to #19 West Liberty State 109-80

Billy Arre scored a season high 30 points in LHU's 109-80 loss at the hands of #19 West Liberty State College at the Main Street Classic.

WHEELING, W.Va. – Lock Haven University’s Men’s Basketball squad (0-10, 0-0 PSAC West) traveled to Wheeling Jesuit University to take part in the Main Street Classic and fell in the first day of action to #19 West Liberty State College (8-0) by a 109-80 score.

Lock Haven struggled in the first half as they found themselves behind at the intermission by a 64-39 score.

Preseason Honorable Mention All-American Billy Arre (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) showed why he was chosen to that prestigious team as he poured in 20 of his game high 30 points in the opening frame.

LHU was plagued by the turnover bug in the opening stanza as they gave the ball to West Liberty 14 times across the 20 minute period.

Despite the fact that they trailed by 25 points, Lock Haven didn’t lay down for West Liberty State as they battled to the final buzzer.

The Bald Eagles fought hard as they were only outscored 45-41 in the final 20 minutes of play, but eventually fell to the #19 team in the country by a 109-80 score.

Tyrone Palmer (Darby, Pa./Parkway) helped the Lock Haven offense by chipping in ten points, while junior Kelvin McLean (Newport News, Va./Heritage) and fellow classmate A.J. Zimmer’s (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) nine points a piece rounded out the main scoring for the Bald Eagles.

On the glass it was Arre again leading the way as he pulled down ten boards for the double-double performance, which is the first double-double for Arre since February 21, 2007 when he pulled it off against the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown.

Arre also had six assists.

LHU continued their improvement from the charity stripe as they were 75% from the line.

West Liberty was led by Michael Mathey’s 20 point afternoon, but it was the four Hilltoppers in double digits who were the difference in the Lock Haven loss.

LHU will wrap up the 2007 portion of their season as they play again tomorrow, Sunday December 29, 2007 at the Main Street Classic. The Bald Eagles will be looking to end the year on a high note as they take on host Wheeling Jesuit University at 4 p.m.
