Bald Eagles wrap up competition at Southern Scuffle

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Lock Haven University wrestling team wrapped up competition today at the Southern Scuffle hosted by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

The tournament featured several Top 25 teams and numerous ranked individuals with the Bald Eagles finishing 18th overall.

Leading the way for LHU was freshman John Trumbetti (Montvale, N.J./St. Joseph Regional) who placed eighth overall at 125 pounds.

It didn’t take long for Trumbetti to make his mark at his first Southern Scuffle as his first match only lasted 33 seconds, as that was all the New Jersey-native needed to pin Frank Celorrio of Appalachian State University.

Trumbetti then dropped his next match falling to Bloomsburg University’s Mike Sees, the 2007 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) champion at 125 pounds. He would however bounce back winning three straight matches before falling 7-5 on this way to an eighth-place showing.

Clint Shirk (Julian, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) saw his first action of the season for the Bald Eagles and showed strong promise for the crimson and white. Despite opening the tournament with a loss he bounced back to string off four straight wins to go 4-2 over the two-day event.

At 149 pounds, redshirt-junior Matt Fittery’s (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) hot streak continued in the tournament’s opening matches as he won his first two bouts by major decisions stretching his streak to five straight wins by major decision. He finished 3-2 at the tournament.
