LHU Basketball - Men

Bald Eagles fall to Cheyney 57-56

Billy Arre led the way for LHU with 23 points but it wasn't enough as LHU lost their 14th game in a row, 57-56 at Cheyney.

CHEYNEY, Pa. – Last second heroics by Cheyney University’s (6-4) Robbie Simpson nullified Lock Haven University’s (0-14, 0-0 PSAC West) attempt to win their first game of the 2007-08 campaign as LHU traveled home from Cheyney with a 57-56 loss at the hands of the Wolves.

Both teams battled throughout the first half as the opening frame saw the score tied six times and the lead change hands five times throughout the game’s first 20 minutes.

Cheyney got on the board first as Simpson landed the games first score to give Cheyney a 2-0 advantage.

LHU quickly tied it up at two a piece as Denny Mortimer (Silver Spring, Md./Mansfield University) knocked down The Haven’s only free throws of the afternoon with 17:15 to go in the first half.

Both teams would exchange leads for the majority of the first stanza but it was with 2:22 to play in the half that a Billy Arre (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) layup would give LHU the lead for the remainder of the frame as that score gave LHU a 22-20 advantage.

Arre would then knock down a trey as the clock expired on the first half as Lock Haven took a 30-26 lead into the locker room.

Lock Haven would maintain their lead over the Wolves until 5:27 to play when Simpson buried a set of free throws to give Cheyney a 55-54 lead.

From then until four seconds remaining in the game the score would remain the same, until Arre would land a jumper to give LHU their fifth lead of the afternoon at a 56-55 tally.

It was beginning to look like LHU was going to finally get the goose egg out of the wins column, but Simpson had the final say.

Cheyney would go the length of the court and Tyrone Smith would miss a layup but LHU couldn’t come down with the rebound as Simpson came in the lane and tipped it in to give Cheyney the 57-56 victory.

LHU was hot from the field as they shot 46.9 percent on the afternoon and was led by Arre’s game high 23 points.

The Haven also got a hand from junior Kelvin McLean (Newport News, Va./Heritage) who chipped in 10 points and led the team with his seven boards.

LHU was outrebounded 29-24 in the loss.

Cheyney was led on the afternoon by Simpson’s 20 points.

The Bald Eagles are next back in action as they open up West division play in a men’s/women’s doubledip at Shippensburg on January 16, 2008. Tip off from Shippensburg is slated for 8 p.m.
