LHU Basketball - Men

Bald Eagles come up short against California (PA) 72-64

Billy Arre ld a balance offensive attack that fell short as his 14 points were enough for LHU to get win number two as they fell to California (PA) 72-64

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Lock Haven University’s Men Basketball squad (1-17, 1-3 PSAC West) found themselves trailing by as many as 16 points twice in the game as a near comeback effort fell short as they fell to visiting California University of Pennsylvania (12-4, 3-0 PSAC West) 72-64 at Thomas Fieldhouse.

With seven and change to play, LHU found themselves trailing by 16 points, but stiff defensive play from the Bald Eagles and a quick scoring attack allowed LHU to go on a 23-10 run to claw back to within two with less than 90 ticks to play after a Jarrell Spence (Philadelphia/Scotland-School) triple made the score 66-64.

That two point margin was as close as LHU would get though as Cal knocked in the games final six points as they left The Haven with a 72-64 victory over the Bald Eagles.

Lock Haven was led on the afternoon from none other than Billy Arre (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) who knocked down 14 points for The Haven with 10 of those 14 coming in the second half.

Arre now finds himself in sixth place on the all-time scoring charts with 1460 career points, he trails Doug LeGette (1978-82: 1496) in fifth place by 36 points.

Two other players were in double figures for the Bald Eagles who shot a moderate 35% from the field. Denny Mortimer (Silver Spring, Md./Mansfield University) knocked down 13 points while Kelvin McLean (Newport News, Va./Heritage) threw down 11 of his own.

Arre also led the Bald Eagles on the glass with seven boards as LHU barely lost the rebounding battle 25-24.

Free throws were the difference maker in the game as California (PA) was 24-30 for 80% while LHU was 10-15 for 66% for the game.

Cal was led by Alioune Mbaye (Dakar, Senegal/Delafosse) who chipped in a game high 16 points and just missed the double-double by one rebound as he hauled in nine boards on the afternoon.

The Bald Eagles are next back in action as they host Edinboro University on Groundhog Day, Saturday, February 2, 2008 at 3 p.m. at Thomas Fieldhouse.
