LHU Basketball - Men

Bald Eagles fall to visiting Edinboro 78-65

Kelvin McLean dumped in a career high 23 points while Billy Arre put in 28 of his own, but it wasnt enough as LHU fell to visiting Edinboro 78-65

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Despite a game high 28 point effort from Billy Arre (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) and a career high 23 from Kelvin McLean (Newport News, Va./Heritage), the Lock Haven men’s basketball team (1-18, 1-4 PSAC West) fell to visiting Edinboro (15-4, 5-0 PSAC West) 78-65 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West division play at Thomas Fieldhouse.

In what was a slugfest for the majority of the contest, The Haven hung around and played tough with the team that’s tied with California (PA) for the number one spot in the West division of the conference as LHU saw solid play throughout the contest.

The Haven would find themselves trailing the visiting Fighting Scots early on as Edinboro jumped out to an early 8-3 lead just three minutes into the affair.

It would take LHU no time at all to claw back into the game as Arre took control early and knocked down two triples in 33 seconds to give LHU a 9-8 lead.

Edinboro answered rapidly as a Gil Cummings layup found the bottom of the net to give the Fighting Scots a 10-9 advantage.

McLean would answer with a layup of his own for the Bald Eagles as they would take the lead back at 11-10.

LHU’s lead would last until 12:28 to play in the half when Edinboro big man Ryan McLemore would put in two of his 11 points to give the Scots the lead for good.

With 9:33 to go in the opening frame, The Haven would knot the game up at 17 but a 19-6 run would give Edinboro a sizeable 36-23 lead to take into the intermission.

Edinboro’s lead would get into double digits twice in the second half but LHU wouldn’t go away as with 3:38 to play the once 15 point Fighting Scot lead had been decimated to a meager three points at a 64-61 margin.

Lock Haven would go ice cold from the field over the games final three and half minutes as Edinboro would pull away late to travel back to Erie with a 78-65 victory and a perfect slate in the conference.

The Haven was led on the afternoon by Arre’s game high 28 point effort. Arre now needs only eight points on Wednesday against visiting IUP to put himself into fifth place on the all-time Haven scoring list.

Arre got some help from McLean who had a career day as he knocked in 23 points to go with his team high 12 boards for the double double, before fouling out in the latter part of the game.

Edinboro was led on the day by Devon Knight’s 21 point effort as he led a potent Fighting Scots offensive attack that had four players in double figures.

On the glass, McLemore had a monster game as he hauled in a game high 19 rebounds.

The Bald Eagles are next back in action as they host IUP on Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at 6 p.m. at Thomas Fieldhouse.
