EAST STROUSBURG, Pa. – The Lock Haven University men’s and women’s track and field teams wrapped up competition today at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championships at East Stroudsburg University.
The Lady Eagles finished third overall and were led by two individual champions.
Senior Amanda Reinmiller (Conyngham, Pa./Hazleton) and junior Jakia Gumby (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) both earned individual tiles for the Haven women.
The Bald Eagles finished sixth overall and earned a title in the 4x800 meter relay.
Reinmiller took first in the women’s pentathlon with 3380 points, 36 points better than the closest competitor.
Gumby won the shot put, as she led a one-two Haven finish in the event. Her mark of 42-08.26 was good enough for the win while senior Jen Andrews (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) was right behind in her in second with a throw of 42.01.50.
Gumby’s mark is also the second-best in school history.
The Lady Eagles came up big in the throws as they also went three-four-five-eight in the weight throw.
Andrews was third, while Alaina Leonard (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) and Kristina Hamm (Roaring Spring, Pa./Central) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Gumby was also eighth in the event as the Lady Eagles dominated the throwing events at this year’s championships.
The Lady Eagles also got a strong showing from junior high jumper Chelsea Morse (Beaver Dams, N.Y./Campbell-Savona), who finished second in the high jump with a jump of 5-09.25.
Morse’s mark ties the all-time championship record as she was beat on attempts.
Junior Shala Simms (Ardmore, Pa./Upper Darby) added a fourth place finish in the 800 meter run.
The Bald Eagles were led by sophomore thrower Randy Sylvia (Johnstown, Pa./Richland), junior Paul Martin (Pickering, Ontarion/Pine Ridge Secondary) as well as strong efforts in the middle distances.
The Bald Eagles foursome of Justin Amy (Sweet Valley, Pa./Lake-Lehman), Brandon Pomerantz (Holland, Pa./Council Rock North), Cory Spidell (Home, Pa./ Marion Center) and Ben McConnell (Danville, Pa./Danville) combined to win the 4x8 relay in a time of 7:47.29.
Their time was an all-time PSAC record and PSAC championship record.
Sylvia took second in the weight throw with a mark of 57-09.50, which also established a LHU men’s school record. His mark is also a NCAA provisional mark.
Martin added a second and two third place finishes. He was second in the 400 (49.14) and third in the 55M hurdles (7.59). Both of these times are NCAA provisional marks.
Martin and Ivars Lurops (Riga, Latvia/Green Mountain College) were part of a three-way tie for third in the men’s high jump.
McConnell was also third in the 800 with a time of 1:56.30 and Pomerantz added a third place showing in the mile with a time of 4:14.70. Pomerantz’s time is an NCAA qualifying time.
Spidell also turned in a strong showing placing fifth in both the 800 and mile.
Both teams are back in action when they head to the NCAA Division II National Championships March 14-15 in Mankato, Minn. at Minnesota State University Mankato
