Terray set to dive into NCAA championship competition

Amanda Terray has made history all year long and looks to continue that trend this week at the NCAA championships in Missouri.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Freshman Amanda Terray (Coaldale, Pa./Panther Valley) of the Lock Haven University swim team is set to compete at the NCAA Division II Men’s & Women’s Swimming & Diving National Championships.

Terray qualified in four events, as she made history this season becoming the first woman in LHU school history of qualify for the NCAA championships.

She qualified in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke events and will compete at the championships in three of the four.

This year’s championships are being held at the Mizzou Aquatics Center in Columbia, Mo., and are being co-hosted by the Missouri S&T and the University of Missourie.

Terray is looking to cap off a sensational rookie campaign with a few more big swims this week and LHU head coach Andy Weager (third season) feels she is more than ready to do so.

The Lady Eagle’s freshman phenom has already begun to re-write the LHU swimming record books this season. She is the school record holder in the 100 backstroke (57.56) and 200 backstroke (2:04.27). She also holds the third best time in school history in both the 50 freestyle (24.63) and 100 freestyle (53.58).

In her last outing at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships Terray became the first Lady Eagle in history to capture an individual PSAC championship.

She won the 200 backstroke, an event she has dominated all season long with a time of 2:04.27.

Heading into the championships Terray is ranked eighth in the 200 back, 10th in the 100 back, 44th in the 100 free and 46th in the 50 free.

She will compete in all, but the 100 free style as she as opted to focus on the 200 backstroke. Both events are schedule for the same day and the 200 backstroke has been her bread and butter event all season long and an event where she looks to make the biggest splash.

At the NCAA championships the top eight athletes in each event earn All-American status and places nine-16 earn honorable mention All-American honors.

An All-American honor would certainly cap off a very impressive year for the freshman and she is there to go after it.

“Amanda has had a pretty good year so far. It took a while to get used to the training schedule of a college swimming program, but I think she’s adapted well,” said Wager.

The training certainly paid off in long run this season for Terray and Waeger, but the two won’t be happy with just getting to this point.

“It’s great to qualify for this meet, but we aren’t going to be satisfied with just being there,” Waeger said. “We are going with a purpose of scoring some points and hopefully get into the top eight in the 100 and 200 backstroke.”

The 50 freestyle on Wednesday gives Terray a chance to see what a National Championship feels like and Waeger says they will use it for just that purpose.

It gives her a chance “to get used to it all,” and shake some nerves Waeger said.

The 100 back is scheduled for Friday and the 200 back is set for Saturday.

Terray’s preparation for event has been good and it all comes down to this.

“We have had some really great workouts leading up,” said Waeger who is looking for big things from Terray this week.

“Amanda is a straight up racet and should really thrive with the level of competition she is going to face,” he added.

Trails begin Wed, March 12 at 10:30 a.m. The women’s 50 freestyle is event No. 5 of the day.

LHU head coach Andy Waeger will be updating a blog so you can stay updated with all that is going on in Missouri.
