LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (7-11) split a home doubleheader with Bloomsburg University (4-14) today at Foundation Field.
The Bald Eagles took game one 4-3, but couldn’t get any offense going in game two and got shutout 13-0 by the Huskies.
In game one LHU got a solid outing from sophomore pitcher Josh Rote (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain), who improved to 2-1 on the year.
Rote went 6-2/3 innings with seven strikeouts. He only walked three Bloom batters and gave up just five hits. Rote gave up three runs, two of which were earned.
The Bald Eagles wasted little time in providing Rote with some help as Mark Strouse (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) led off the ballgame with a homerun.
Strouse had an all-around solid outing for the Haven as he went 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. He also played a fine game defensively in center field making several diving catches in late inning action.
The Bald Eagles were up 2-0 after two, as Strouse was at it again in the second inning. He drove in Evan Petro (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) after a single to centerfield.
Bloomsburg battled back and tied the game in the top half of the fifth inning. The lead was short lived as the Bald Eagles went back on top 3-2 after five.
In the bottom of the fifth inning first baseman Matt Palko (Freeland, Pa./Hazelton Area) recorded a sacrifice fly that drove in Strouse, providing the eventual game-winning run.
Lock Haven would tack on an insurance run in the sixth.
Third baseman Tim Bremen (Effort, Pa./Sussux County C.C.) was 2-for-3 in game one.
Despite a very strong early effort from senior pitcher Pat Young (Allensville, Pa./Indian Valley) the Haven was shutout in game two 13-0.
Young went five innings with six strikeouts, but the Bald Eagle bats were cold.
LHU only managed five hits in game two.
The Bald Eagles and the Huskies meet again tomorrow at Bloomsburg. The doubleheader is set to start at noon.
