ST. LOUIS. – The Lock Haven University wrestling team wrapped up competition today at the 2008 NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis.
Redshirt-juniors Matt Fittery (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) and Ben Hepburn (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) each picked up one win at the championships.
Each finished with a 1-2 record, while true-freshman Billy Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) went 0-2 in his NCAA debut.
Competing at 197 pounds, Hepburn’s NCAA championships started by facing the tournaments No. 1 seed in Joshua Glenn of American University. Hepburn wrestled tough, but fell 2-0 to Glenn.
Hepburn bounced back and picked up a 2-1 win over Gardner-Webb’s Dustin Porter. Hepburn then closed out his NCAA appearance with a 5-2 loss to Rider’s Timothy Morrison, the tourney’s 11th seed.
Hepburn finishes the season 18-15.
Fittery opened his tournament with a win at the very deep and talented 149-pound weight class. He downed Missouri’s Joshua Wagner 11-6 for his 24th win of the year.
Fittery then dropped the next two matches ending his season. He finished the season with a team-high 24 wins and a 24-12 record.
He fell to No. 11 Ryan Lang of Northwestern University 11-4 and Lehigh’s Trevor Chinn 10-3.
Ashnault, the Haven’s rookie at 133 who has really turned it on as of late went 0-2.
He fell to Oregon’s Ryan Dunn 12-11 and lost to UNC-Greensboro’s Jeff Hedges 5-2.
