LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (18-3) is one step closer to the three-peat as the Lady Eagles downed Quinnipiac University (5-13) 4-1 this afternoon in Northeast Conference (NEC) semifinal action.
Playing on its home turf The Haven took full advantage, dominating the match on its way to tomorrow’s championship.
In the day’s earlier semifinal Rider (13-6) shutout Sacred Heart (7-12) 2-0 setting up a rematch of last year’s championship contest.
The win extended LHU’s win streak to eight matches, while also extending the Lady Eagles overall unbeaten streak against NEC opponents to 23 matches.
Lock Haven wasted little time in getting going today, much to the delight of the home crowd.
LHU went up 1-0 less than two minutes as Casey Hughes (Schwenksville, Pa./Souderton) ripped home a penalty corner.
In the 23rd minute the Lady Eagles heavy offensive pressure drew another penalty corner and The Haven took full advantage.
This time it was 2008 NEC Player of the Year Blair Wynne (Arima, Trinidad and Tobago/Sangre Grande), who drilled it home, putting LHU up 2-0.
Wynne struck again less than minutes later as Lock Haven took full control, leading 3-0.
Alana Lewis (Trinidad and Tobago/Saint Augustine) and Emma Wessner (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) were credited with assists on both penalty corner goals as LHU took the 3-0 lead into halftime.
Quinnipiac didn’t go away without a fight and struck in the 55th minute, cutting The Haven lead to 3-1.
Amy Hordendorf (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights) put it away late in the match, as she scored off a Wynne pass giving Lock Haven a 4-1 lead.
Sophomore goalie Erin Terreson (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) made three saves in the win, including a sensational stop on a penalty stroke with just over 10 minutes to go in the match.
The Haven’s defensive effort was solid throughout as it only allowed seven shots in 70 minutes of action.
The Lady Eagles are back in action tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 8) in the NEC Championship game when they take on Rider at 1 p.m. on Charlotte Smith Field. During the regular season Lock Haven downed Rider 1-0 in overtime.
