CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Lock Haven University volleyball team (29-6) fell to host California (Pa.) University (39-1) 3-0 in tonight’s NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Semifinal match.
Cal, ranked No. 17th nationally won 25-23, 25-17 and 25-13, as the Lady Eagles did everything they could to take down the tournament’s number-one seed.
With the win, the Vulcans advance to tomorrow’s Regional Championship-match against Wheeling Jesuit, who downed Slippery Rock University earlier today.
The entire match tonight was a back and forth affair, but California was able to edge The Haven in Hamer Hall.
Leading the way for Lock Haven was senior Stacey Borgia (Factoryville, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) and freshman Haley Gribler (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy) as the two combined for 24 kills. Each player knocked down a dozen kills apiece, while Borgia also added eight digs.
Christie Naumann (Charters Towers, Australia/Gladstone) helped LHU’s attack with nine kills. She was solid all over the court for the crimson and white and added 10 digs.
Fabiana Gomez (Montevideo, Uruguay/Consego de. E.S.) was solid as usual and churned out a 31-assist match. She also recorded 11 digs.
The Lady Eagles finished the 2008 season 29-6 overall after capturing the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division regular season crown with a perfect 12-0 record.
