INDIANA, Pa. – The Lock Haven University swim team wrapped up competition today at the IUP Crimson Hawk Invitational.
The three-day meet, which kicked off on Thursday proved to me a good one for LHU, as the Lady Eagles turned in some sensational performances in the pool over the last three days of competition.
Over the three day meet the Lady Eagles hit four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying marks, while turning in six LHU all-time top-five performance, which included one school record.
LHU finished third out of eight teams.
Lock Haven coach Andy Waeger called it all-around “outstanding” showing and was very pleased with his athletes.
It seemed as every time a Lady Eagle hit the pool their swim resulted in a season best time.
Lock Haven capped off the meet today with 11 season-best times in 12 swims, a stat that had Waeger very excited, as this kind of swimming was the theme for Waeger’s squad all weekend.
Three different Lady Eagles hit The Haven’s four PSAC qualifying marks, including freshmen Kasey Campbell (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) and Samantha Durham (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) as well as junior Amanda Palmer (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East), who qualified in two events.
Campbell kicked off a solid three days on Thursday by qualifying for the PSAC Championships in the 500 yard freestyle. She was second overall with a time of 5:22.37. Campbell’s time in the 500 also marked a Lock Haven all-time top five performance (3rd all-time).
Palmer, who continued her string of strong swimming showed her solid mid-season form with two PSAC qualifying marks yesterday. She was second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:51.07 (PSAC mark). Palmer also qualified in the 100 butterfly (1:02.62) after a fourth-place showing. Palmer’s 400 IM performance also marked a LHU top-five performance as it will go down as the second fastest time in school history.
Durham hit her PSAC qualifying mark today in the 50 freestyle. Lock Haven swam a time trail for the 200 freestyle relay and Durham led off with a 25.44, which qualifies her for the conference championships.
Campbell’s strong outing didn’t end with her PSAC qualifying swim on Thursday as she churned out another special swim today. She broke the school record in the 1650 freestyle as she continues to enjoy a sensational early rookie season. Her time of 18:29.01 put her atop the LHU list, but her day didn’t end there as she came back and swam the school’s third fastest 1000 freestyle (11:14.33) time ever.
Palmer also hit a Lock Haven all-time top-five performance on Thursday. Palmer added a sixth-place finish in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:18.96, which is the fifth fastest time in school history.
Much like Campbell, Palmer wasn’t quite finished and saved some of her best for last, turning in more solid swimming today. She turned in a strong outing in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:16.64. Not only did the time smash her previous lifetime best, it also ranks as the third-fastest time in LHU history.
Waeger called it a “great time for mid-season.”
Durham almost hit a PSAC qualifying mark earlier today, but missed by just .03 seconds in the 100 free. Her time of 55.80 was nonetheless solid. She was also fifth overall in the 50 free on Thursday (25.86).
The Haven also had some solid relay showings including a third-place finish in Thursday’s 200 yard freestyle relay. The foursome of Durham, Brittany Williams (North East, Pa./North East), Palmer and Campbell turned in a 1:47.03.
Yesterday LHU took sixth in the 200 medley relay with a team of Nicole Faulstick (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area), Rachel Vagnoni (Norristown, Pa./Norristown), Durham and Campbell.
The Lady Eagles are now off until they travel to Cocoa Beach, Fla. for winter training following the holiday season. LHU officially returns on the pool on Friday, Jan. 16, 2009 at 6 p.m. when Lock Haven hosts Millersville University. Both teams dive into the Zimmerli Pool at 6 p.m.
