Lady Eagles bid for an upset falls short, LHU edged by #6 Cal

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women’s basketball team’s (3-12, 0-2 PSAC West) bid for upset came a up just a bit short, as the Lady Eagles were edged by No. 6 California (Pa.) University (13-2, 2-0 PSAC West) 76-61 at home in Thomas Fieldhouse in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

Leading the way for Lock Haven was senior Lauren Kelshaw (Weatherly, Pa./Weatherly), who scored a team-high 25 points.

Sophomore Katie Kendall (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) netted 13 points, including a trio of three-pointers. She was 3-for-6 from downtown on the day.

Evelyn Wynn (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) and Malika Miller (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) both help pace The Haven scoring with six points apiece.

Cal was led by four different players in double-figures, including Kayla Smith, who scored a game-high 31. She was the difference for California, as she also grabbed nine rebounds.

Lock Haven was up 11 at halftime, leading 39-28.

It marked only the second time this season that Cal trailed an opponent after the opening half of play.

LHU head coach Jennifer Smith’s team shot a solid 64 percent in the first half to help them take the lead into the locker room.

Just over two minutes into the game LHU had a seven point advantage leading 10-3.

A big key in Lock Haven’s opening run of scoring was Kelshaw, who scored 11 of The Haven’s first 13 points.

With 10:20 left in the first half, Cal had its first lead, but it would be short lived as LHU quickly jumped back on top before ultimately taking the 11-point advantage in the locker room.

Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Cal had clawed its way back and took a one-point lead.

Cal would lead the remainder of the game as Lock Haven couldn’t cut into the Vulcan lead.
