Men’s and Women’s Track & Field solid at Lehigh, Bald Eagles win Covert Classic
 

BETHLEHAM, Pa. – The Lock Haven University men’s and women’s track and field teams turned in a solid outing yesterday the Covert Classic, hosted by Lehigh University.

The Bald Eagles won the meet with 131 points, besting the 12-team field. Host-Leigh was second with 101 points.

The Lady Eagles were fourth overall with 56 points.

The Haven claimed several individual champions as LHU continued to look strong on the track and in the field events, particularly the throwing events on the women’s side.

The Lady Eagles hit a total of 27 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship qualifying marks and saw one school record fall.

The LHU men recorded 25 PSAC qualifying marks as it proved to be an all-around fantastic performance for the two Lock Haven squads.

The Bald Eagles sprint corps continues to impress early as three athletes claimed four individual championships.

Helping to pace The Haven men’s team championship was a 1-2-3 finish in the 400 meter dash.

Chris Jones (Jersey City, N.J./Lincoln) took first for LHU (51.34), Steve Roberts (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) was second (51.37) and Ben McConnell (Danville, Pa./Danville) finished third (53.19) for The Haven to help secure the sweep. Kevin Moore (Elverson, Pa./Twin Valley) added a sixth-place showing in the 400 as LHU dominated the event.

Jones came back and took first in the 200 (22.98) as he turned in a very strong outing.

Greg Mock (Sicklerville, N.J./Timbercreek) had a strong day sprinting. He won the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.99 and placed second behind Jones in the 200 (23.00).

Preston Faulkner (Trappe, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) was third in the 60 with a time of 7.22.

Chris Edelman (Elverson, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) had another big day for LHU as he won the 500 with a time of 1:06.60. He was also a part of Lock Haven’s winning foursome in the 4x400 meter relay.

Nathan Zondlo (Avoca, Pa./Pittston Area) placed third in the mile (4:28.23).

Brandon Pomerantz (Holland, Pa./Council Rock North) and Nick Hilton (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) went 2-3 in the 3K with times of 8:48.73 and 8:52.77, respectively.

AJ Johnson (Coventry, R.I./Coventry) and Tim Getz (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) were solid in the 5K with second and fourth-place showing.

Randy Sylvia (Johnstown, Pa./Pine Richland) was second in the weight throw with a mark of 57-09.00.

Leading the way on the women’s side was a high jump title by Chelsea Morse (Beaver Dams, N.Y./Campbell-Savona) and another strong showing by the Lady Eagles in the throwing circle.

Morse won the high jump with a mark 5-07 before coming back to take seventh in the long jump. Teammate Cassie Snider (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) was eight in the long jump.

The Lady Eagles dominated the weight throw and were led by Alaina Leonard (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern), who was third overall with a mark of 51-00.00.

Kristina Hamm (Roaring Springs, Pa./Central) and JaKia Gumby (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) were sixth and seventh, respectively. Hamm hit a mark of 45-07.00 while Gumby’s mark of 45-04.50 was good enough for seventh overall.

The Lady Eagles throwing success continued as Gumby placed fifth in the shot put with a heave of 38-09.75.

Freshman Lindsey Lambert (Howell, N.J./Howell) had a huge day in winning the 5K. Her first-place time of 17:57.52 established a Lady Eagle school record as she continues to impress in her rookie campaign. Janelle Gobel (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) was fourth in the 5K.

Meagan Wolf (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) was third in 500 meter dash. Her time of 1:20.53 is the third fastest time in school history.

Shala Simms (Ardmore, Pa./Upper Darby) was second in the mile with a time of 5:16.35.

Alyssa Douma (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) placed fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:23.87.

Kristie Warren (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) turned in a solid fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 34-10.50.

Lock Haven returns to action next weekend with athletes competing at several venues. LHU will be action at the Penn State National Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 30-31 and at the Bucknell Open (Fri.-Sat., Jan 30-31).
