Wrestling falls to local-rival Bloomsburg 29-9 in EWL action
 

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Lock Haven University wrestling team (6-9-1, 1-4 EWL) fell 29-9 to local-rival Bloomsburg University (8-7, 3-3 EWL) tonight in Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action.

The Bald Eagles won three of 10 bouts.

After The Haven dropped the first match of the night at 125, Billy Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) put Lock Haven right back in it with a 6-4 win at 133 pounds. Ashnault beat Jason Guffey to knot the match at 3-3.

Host-Bloomsburg would however win the next five bouts to take command of the match.

Seniors Tom Kocher (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and Ben Hepburn (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) picked up back-to-back wins at 184 and 197.

Kocher won 7-2 over Brain Shaw at 184 and Hepburn followed that up with a 2-1 win over Bloom’s Jesse Hasseman.

The Bald Eagles return to action on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. when they host Clarion University in Thomas Fieldhouse.

125: Bloomsburg’s Ian Moser led 4-2 after one period on the strength of two takedowns. In the second period there was no scoring as Lock Haven’s Nick Hyatt controlled all of the period. Hyatt had an escape with 1:20 left to make it 4-3 before Moser got a takedown to make it 6-3.

133-BU’s Jason Guffey took the early lead with a takedown before LHU’s Billy Ashnault got an escape and then a takedown for a 3-2 lead after one period. Ashnault started the second period with a three-point near fall. Guffey escaped to make it 6-3 after two. Guffey picked up a point for stalling by Ashnault, but Ashnault hung on for a 6-4 win.

141-Bloomsburg’s Ricky Donald got the only points of the first period with an early takedown to lead 2-0 after one. Donald escaped from Zach Kell at the start of the second period, then, Donald scored a takedown for a 5-0 lead after two periods. There was no scoring in the third period and with riding time Donald posted a 6-0 victory.

149-Lock Haven’s Matt Fittery scored a late first period takedown to lead 2-0 after one period. BU’s George Hickman escaped to start the second, then late in the period put Fittery on his back and with 14 seconds left in the period earned the win by fall.

157-BU’s Matt Moley had three takedowns to lead 6-2 after one period. Moley got two takedowns and one point for stalling by LHU’s Ollie Cooperwood to lead 11-3 after two periods. Two third period takedowns for Moley and one point for riding time gave Moley a 16-5 win.

165-BU’s Ricky Schmelyun scored a takedown of the Bald Eagles’ Aaron Ernest just seconds into the match and turned it into a win by fall at the 1:40 mark of the first period.

174-BU’s Nate Graham scored a first period takedown of Travis Stem to lead 2-0. There was no scoring in the second period. Graham got a third period escape, two takedowns and one point for riding time to win 10-2.

184-There was no scoring the first period between BU’s Brian Shaw and LHU’s Tom Kocher. In the second period Kocher got an escape and two takedowns to lead 5-1 after two periods. Kocher added a late takedown and won by a score of 7-2.

197-There was no scoring in the first period between LHU’s Ben Hepburn and BU’s Jesse Hasseman. In the second Hasseman opened the period with an escape for the only scoring. Hepburn escaped to start the third for the only scoring to send the match to sudden victory. Despite a flurry of activity there was no scoring and the match went to a tie breaker. Hepburn escaped from the bottom to lead 2-1, while Hasseman did not escape giving Hepburn a 2-1 win.

285-There was no scoring in the first period between BU’s Zac Walsh and LHU’s Gabe Murtoff. Walsh started the second with an escape for the only scoring. In the third period Murtoff escaped, but Walsh got a point for riding time to win 2-1.
