Baseball splits with Mercyhurst in PSAC West action

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (9-17, 4-2 PSAC West) earned an important split with visiting Mercyhurst College (15-10, 7-3 PSAC West) today at Foundation Field.

The Bald Eagles took game one of the twin bill 1-0 and a seventh-inning rally fell short in game two, as Lock Haven was edged 4-2.

Game one proved to be a pitchers dual between LHU’s Andrew Simonik (Jermyn, Pa./Lakeland) and MC’s Steve Grife.

Simonik was the victor after a sensational seven-inning outing on the mound. He pitched a three-hitter and struck out six, while allowing zero walks.

Lock Haven recorded six hits and scored the game’s only run in the second inning.

It was a Jeremie Cook (Venice, Fla./Venice) double in the bottom of the second that drove in the game’s only run.

Matt Palko (Freeland, Pa./Hazelton Area) led the way at the plate with 2-for-3 performance.

Down 4-1 in the heading into the bottom of the seventh of game two, Lock Haven’s two-out magic fell short.

With two outs Brian Kochik (Snow Shoe, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) doubled to cut the lead to 4-2, but that’d be all The Haven could muster up.

Six different players accounted for LHU’s six hits in game two.

Mercyhurst’s four runs came off nine hits.

Josh Rote (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain) got the start on the mound for LHU, but gave way to Tyler Rumsey (Mansfield, Pa./Mansfield), who worked the final 5.1 innings.

Rumsey struck out three.

The Lakers Nick Gillung picked up the win in game two.

Both teams return to action tomorrow as Lock Haven travels to Erie, Pa. to take on Mercyhurst. First pitch at MC is set for 1 p.m.
