FARMVILLE, Va. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team (2-0) once again used some late heroics as the Lady Eagles downed host-Longwood (1-1) 2-1 in a thrilling match.
Lock Haven netted the game-winning goal with less than two minutes left on the clock and all three of the game’s goals were scored with less than eight minutes to go in the tightly contested contest.
After a scoreless first half of play, Longwood opened the scoring in the 63rd minute of action.
Kristi Shepps (Willow Street, Pa./Penn Manor), who scored the game-winner yesterday was once again a huge part of The Haven’s heroics today. With just a little over two minutes to play in regulation the sophomore knocked home a rebound to level the score at 1-1.
Shepps wasn’t done there and with less than two minutes left in the game she was on a breakaway where she played a perfect pass to Suzann Hobart (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land). Hobart, a senior left no doubt and buried the ball in the back of the cage with only 1:41 left to play, giving LHU its second straight win.
Goalkeeper Erin Terreson (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad) kept Lock Haven in the game throughout with a seven-save effort.
The Lady Eagles held a slight advantage in shots (12-11) and penalty corners (6-5).
With the win LHU improves to 2-0 on the young season.
Yesterday (Saturday, Aug. 29) The Haven opened the 2009 season with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Georgetown. Longwood opened its season on Friday with a 1-0 victory over Georgetown.
The Lady Eagles return to action on Friday, September 4 at 6 p.m. when they travel the short distance to take on rival and 11th ranked Penn State.
