LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock University men’s soccer team (2-2-1, 1-2 PSAC West) earned an all-important Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West win today at home, as the Bald Eagles downed Gannon University (2-3-1, 1-1 PSAC West) 3-1.
The win was Lock Haven’s second straight and first at home this season.
Lock Haven took the early 1-0 lead in the hard-fought PSAC West battle after Terrence Gochera (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) scored in the 20th minute.
Greg Shertzer (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) played a perfect through ball to a streaking Gochera, who left no doubt and buried the ball far post.
Gannon was quick to respond and less than minute later the visitors had leveled the score at 1-1.
In the 31st minute Colin Callaghan (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) scored what would be the eventual game-winner.
Callaghan collected a loose ball inside the penalty area and tucked the ball far post to put LHU ahead 2-1 before halftime.
Less than two minutes into the second half Shertzer smashed home a rebound to put the Bald Eagles up 3-1.
LHU goalie Chris Custer (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) was very solid between the pipes and made six saves including a sensational stop during the later stages of the match.
LHU head coach Doug Moore got notable performances from almost everyone in the lineup as it was a true team effort today on the way to the win.
Lyndell Pompey (South Oropouche, Trinidad & Tobago/Wheeling Jesuit) led a very solid defensive effort for Lock Haven.
The Bald Eagles return to action when they travel to California (Pa.) University on Wednesday, September 16 for a critical PSAC West match. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
