OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Sophomore Greg Shertzer (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) netted a hat trick to the lead the Lock Haven University men’s soccer team (4-3-2) past perennial power NYIT (3-5) 5-2 today on the road.
Lock Haven head coach Doug Moore was very pleased with the team’s effort, particularly that in the second half of play where the Bald Eagles scored four goals to help them roll past host-NYIT.
Shertzer put LHU up 1-0 in the 40th before tacking on two second half goals.
Lock Haven was leading 1-0, but with less than a minute to play in the opening half, NYIT tied the match at 1-1. The two sides were deadlocked at 1-1 heading to the locker rooms.
In the 49th minute Drew Clemens (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) put The Haven back on top 2-1, after he converted a penalty shot.
Adam Scheibeler (Montoursville, Pa./Elizabethtown College) drilled home a loose ball at the top of the box in the 62nd minute to make it 3-1.
Less than 10 minutes later NYIT made it 3-2, but Shertzer went to work and capped off a tremendous effort with goals 10 minutes in the 74th and 84th minutes of play.
Goalkeeper Chad Badorf (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) made three saves in the win.
Moore noted that it really says something about his team to get this kind of result at NYIT.
The Bald Eagles get back to action on Saturday, September 26 at 2:30 p.m. when they travel to No. 6 Millersville.
