Bald Eagles set for back-to-back home games, host IUP Saturday at 1 p.m.
 

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University football team is set to host Indiana (Pa.) University on Saturday, October 17 at 1 p.m. Kickoff at Hubert Jack Stadium is set for 1 p.m. in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West matchup.

The Game:

The Bald Eagles (0-6, 0-4 PSAC West) are set for back-to-back home games for the first time in 2009. Lock Haven welcomes IUP (3-4, 0-4 PSAC West) to Hubert Jack Stadium (3,500) on Saturday, October 17 with kickoff in the PSAC West clash set for 1 p.m.

LHU is coming off a 48-14 home-loss to perennial power California (Pa.) University and IUP is coming off a 38-24 loss to No. 12 Edinboro on the Crimson Hawks homecoming.

Last weekend’s loss to Cal marked the 17th straight for The Haven.

IUP started the season 3-0, but has dropped the last four and is the midst of its third longest losing streak since 1982. This will be first time the Crimson Hawks will finish with a losing record in PSAC West play since they went 2-4 in 1981.

The Series:

IUP leads the all-time series 52-17-3 and won last year in Indiana (Pa.) 45-7. Lock Haven won the first-ever meeting in 1925, but hasn’t won since 1981 (41-14).

2009 marks the 30th Anniversary 1979 PSAC Championship:

The 2009 season marks the 30th anniversary of Lock Haven’s 1979 PSAC Championship team. Under the direction of head coach Jack Fisher, The Haven went 9-2 overall and a perfect 9-0 in conference play. The ’79-championship was the last time LHU won the conference and it marked the Bald Eagles eighth PSAC title.

Honoring past players

On Saturday, Lock Haven will honor past Bald Eagle football players. As part of their 2009 Legacy Games, The Haven will welcome back LHU football players from the 80’s and 90’s.

Keep an eye on:

The Bald Eagles defense – The Haven’s defensive unit has put up some tremendous numbers in 2009 … Defensive back Shane Barie leads Lock Haven’s defense with a team-high 33 tackles … He has 19 solo stops, two tackles for a loss, two pass breakups and one forced fumble on the year … Ben Snyder and Wes Plummer both have 32 tackles on the year … 20 of Plummer’s 32 were solo stops … Snyder has two forced fumbles on the season

Devin Sims and Aaron Pryer – Sims has two touchdowns receiving for LHU on the season and has been The Haven’s primary deep-ball threat … Aaron Pryer has put up solid kick return numbers and gives Lock Haven a force when the ball is in his hands … He has 319 kick-return yards on the year.

IUP’s Akwasi Owusu-Ansah – Owusu-Ansah has been sensational for IUP on kick returns … He has two punt returns and two kickoff returns for TDs this season … He had racked up 632 all-purpose yards on the year.

LHU at a glance:

Lock Haven is 0-6 overall and 0-4 in PSAC West play.

The loss last weekend to Cal (48-14) marked the 17th straight for Lock Haven. The Bald Eagles are one loss away from tying their school record for consecutive losses (18 – 1925-27)

Two weeks ago, LHU fell on the road at No. 19 Edinboro (ranked No. 12 in this week’s American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) National Poll).

The loss marked the second of the season to nationally-ranked opponent.

Lock Haven’s lone TD was caught by Devin Sims. Sims 21-yard touchdown reception capped off an eight-play, 62 yard drive.

Clarion was the site of LHU’s last win (2007 season finale) as the Bald Eagles have now lost 16 straight games.

Lock Haven last win at home came on October 28, 2006 against Clarion (W, 14-7).

After using four different quarterbacks in the season-opening loss to WCU, redshirt-freshman Jarret Kratzer saw the majority of time under center in the Ship game. Krazter was 15-for-29 for 111 yards passing.

Junior running back Ibrahim Smith rushed for 37 yards in the loss. Smith had one touchdown, Lock Haven’s first of the 2009 season. Smith’s long run of 11 yards was the TD.

Austin Knighton led Lock Haven’s defensive effort against Shippensburg with a seven-tackle game. Four of his seven stops were solo efforts. Dean Tortorice Shane Barie and Wes Plummer all made six tackles in the game. Tortorice also had one interception, while Plummer made 1.5 tackles for a loss and recorded one sack.

In the 2009 season opener, Lock Haven was shutout 43-0 by nationally-ranked West Chester as the Bald Eagles struggled to get the offense going. LHU used four different quarterbacks, but only managed to rack up 52 total yards.

IUP at a glance:

IUP enters the game winless in Division action and has lost four straight games after starting 3-0.

IUP is led on the ground by Tobias Robinson who has 691 yards … He is averaging 98.7 yds./game and has three TDs.

Quarterback Andrew Krewatch is 77-for-152 passing … He has 957 total yards and five touchdowns on the year … He is averaging 191.4/game.

IUP has a dual threat in their receiving corps … Mychal Skinner has two TD’s and averages 56.7 yards per game … Javon Rowan has four TDs and averages 44.4 yards per game.

Defensively IUP is led by James Carson who has a team-high 53 tackles … He has one interception, five tackles for a loss and three sacks … Cosie Spigelmeyer has 47 stops including 27 solo.

Football topped by Cal (Pa.)

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – (10/10/09) The Lock Haven University football team (0-6, 0-4 PSAC West) fell to perennial power California (Pa.) University (5-2, 4-0 PSAC West) 48-14 tonight at Hubert Jack Stadium in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

Cal opened up a 17-0 lead after the opening quarter and led 31-0 at halftime.

The Bald Eagles tacked on touchdowns in third and fourth quarters.

With 6:13 left in the third quarter Ian Smith (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) scored on a one-yard TD run. Smith’s first career touchdown capped off an 11-play, 68-yard drive that took 5:09.

Smith’s touchdown made it 38-7 in favor of the Vulcans.

With 13:55 left in the fourth quarter Devin Sims (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jarryd Burkett (Altoona, Pa./Altoona). Sims second TD reception of the year capped off an eight-play, 68-yard drive.

Jarret Kratzer (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) got the start under center and was 10-for-13 for 46 yards.

Burkett came in and went 10-for-14 with the one TD. He passed for 110 total yards.

Ryan Poorman (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte) led Lock Haven with five receptions.

Defensively, Lock Haven was led by Luke Ellison (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) and Shane Barrie (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional), who each had a game-high seven tackles.

Six of Ellison’s seven stops were solo efforts and he added one tackle for a loss.

Barie had four solo tackles.

Seven different players made five or more tackles for LHU.

Cal quarterback Josh Portis went 17-for-23 passing for 274 yards and four TDs to lead the Vulcans to victory.

Cal has won five straight games after starting the year 0-2.

Football drops PSAC West opener to #12 IUP

INDIANA, Pa. – (9/20/08) The Lock Haven University football team (0-4, 0-1 PSAC West) lost to No. 12 Indiana (Pa.) University (3-0, 1-0 PSAC West) 45-7 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division opener for both teams.

The Bald Eagles were certainly in the game as they had their chances early and went into halftime tied at 7-7.

LHU went down 7-0 early, but five seconds into the second quarter sophomore running back Ibrahim Smith (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) scored on a two-yard run.

Smith’s two-yard TD run capped off a seven play, 29-yard drive that began in the first quarter.

From there, LHU’s defense would stand strong, only giving up seven points in the opening half of play on the road at IUP.

IUP’s potent offensive attack would come alive in third quarter as the Crimson Hawks scored four touchdowns in the third period.

The hosts tacked on 10 points in the fourth to take the 45-7 win in the conference opener.

Freshman quarterback Jarryd Burkett (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) was 8-for-16 passing and threw one interception. He passed for 33 yards on the day.

Smith led The Haven with 16 rushes for 28 yards.

Defensively LHU was led by Dean Tortorice (Delmont, Pa./Franklin Regional), who had a team-high six tackles. He made five solo stops and recorded one tackles for a loss.

Andre Morrison (Johnstown, Pa./Johnstown) had five tackles while Aaron Pryer (Philadelphia/Roman Catholic) and Shawn Crebs (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) both made four.

IUP is ranked No. 12 nationally in the latest American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) poll.

Back in action:

Lock Haven returns to action on Saturday, October 24 at 1 p.m. when they travel to Gannon. LHU and Gannon meet for the first time in history in 2008. Gannon shutout Lock Haven 26-0 at LHU.
