LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Lock Haven University field hockey team’s (16-4, 7-1 NEC) bid for a sixth straight Northeast Conference (NEC) regular season title came up just a bit shory, as the Lady Eagles were edged 1-0 on the road at Rider (17-1, 8-0 NEC) in a double-overtime thriller.
The match, which was moved to a new venue and encountered several time changes because of poor field conditions at Rider proved to a nail-biter between the two NEC rivals.
The only tally of the contest came in the 99th minute of play.
Rider’s Megan Pisani knocked home a rebound that gave the Broncs the win and the NEC regular season title.
Lock Haven got a sensational effort from goalkeeper Erin Terreson (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad), who kept the Lady Eagles in the game with a tremendous nine-save effort.
LHU held a slight 16-15 advantage in shots and a 14-9 advantage in penalty corners.
Junior forward Amy Hordendorf (Topton, Pa./Brandywine Heights) did everything she could to spark Lock Haven’s attack and turned in a match-high six shots.
The loss was Lock Haven first against a NEC opponent since falling to Quinnipiac 1-0 on October 20, 2006.
The Lady Eagles still hold a remarkable all-time NEC record of 43-3
The Lady Eagles will be back in action next weekend at the NEC Championship Tournament, hosted by Rider. The Lady Eagles will be the tournament’s No. 2 seed with action kicking off on Friday, November 6. The championship will be Saturday, November 7.
