SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Lock Haven University women’s soccer team (7-7-1) earned a hard-fought double-overtime victory over Shippensburg University (6-8) on the road in a very important match for the Lady Eagles.
Senior-captain Kyleigh Roth (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia) netted the game winner with just over four minutes to play in the second overtime period to lift Lock Haven to victory.
The always hard-working Roth used her speed to find the end of a through ball that Melinda Dodson (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land) slotted in through the SHIP defense.
“It was an awesome finish for Roth,” LHU head coach Heather Davis said. “She continues to give it her all for us and never gives up. It’s nice to see such a hard-worker score such a big goal for us in one of our most important games of the season.”
Lock Haven looked strong in the first half, as freshman Arielle Gordon (Epharta, Pa./Epharta) narrowly missed tallying a goal after she hit a shot high from 20 yards out in the 23rd minute of play
Gordon’s opportunity was the Lady Eagles best scoring chance of the half, as the contest was tied 0-0 at the midway point.
Shippensburg entered the second half playing its best soccer of the match as the Lady Raiders dominated a 10 minute span in which they had several opportunities to break the tie early in the half, but couldn’t capitalize.
LHU goalkeeper Emily Wagner (Brick, N.J./Brick Township), who had seven saves in regulation made several key saves to keep the score tied during that period.
The two teams remained tied entering overtime and Lock Haven’s best opportunity of the first overtime came off the foot of freshman Alissa Gamellier (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley), who nearly ended it eight minutes into the overtime off a rebound from a Lindsey Blessing (Fredericksburg, Pa./Northern Lebanon) corner kick, but the shot from 10 yards out sailed just wide.
LHU outshot Shippensburg 23-14 on their way their way to the win.
The Lady Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. when they travel to California (Pa.) University for Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.
