EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Lock Haven University swim team used a total team effort from top to bottom to pick up a huge win over East Stroudsburg University in dual-meet action today at ESU.
The win marked the first for the Lady Eagles over ESU in head coach Andy Waeger’s tenure.
Waeger couldn’t have been more pleased with his team’s effort, saying they went out and gave it their all today, earning a big win for the Haven on the young season.
“Everyone stepped up and raced well today,” Waeger said while also noting that no Lady Eagle finished in sixth place where one scores no points in a dual meet.
The Haven got things going early winning the meet’s first event, which was the 400 medley relay. Swimming on the relay was Amanda Terray (Coaldale, Pa./Panther Valley), Stephanie Kudrick (Coudersport, Pa./Coudersport), Ashley Lightcap (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) and Kelly Grieneisen (Pittsburgh/Plum).
The 1,000 freestyle was also a big event for the Lady Eagles as three different swimmers scored for LHU. Shannon Samanka (DuBois, Pa./DuBois), second, Becky Fountaine (Wantage, N.J./High Point), third, and Ashley Gardner (Smyrna, Del./Dover), fourth all earned valuable points for the Haven in this event.
Grieneisen came up big for Lock Haven as she won the 2,000 freestyle race.
Terray, who has been nothing short of impressive in her young Lady Eagle career continued to swim well while winning the 50 freestyle event edging out here ESU opponents.
The 200 IM also proved to be another key event for LHU as they took second, third and fourth. Kudrick took second, while Amanda Palmer (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) picked up third and Gardner took fourth.
In the 100 butterfly Lightcap took second and Palmer secured fourth.
A real turning point in today’s meet came in the 100 freestyle where freshman Brittany Williams (North East, Pa./North East) edged out an ESU veteran swimmer by .02 seconds for the win.
Waeger called Williams race a huge win for the team today.
Terray continued to impress later in the meet as the Lady Eagle rookie won the 100 backstroke event with an impressive time of 59.59.
The Lady Eagles are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 11 a.m. when they host Mansfield University.
