Bald Eagles Flyin’ High: Advance to PSAC Championships

Lyndell Pompey celebrates after his second goal of the season in the 71st minute.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa.- The Lock Haven University men’s soccer team (13-6, 11-5 PSAC) took another giant leap today, defeating Millersville University 3-0 (11-8-1, 10-5 PSAC) in what could be the final contest at historic McCollum Field, which has been the home of the Bald Eagles for the past 54 years, and advancing to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference finals.

Lock Haven got the goal scoring started off early, as senior All-American candidate Ashley Rosindale (Bradford, England/Beckfoot School) registered his first of three assists on the day in the 20th minute. The dazzling assist was off a deflected corner kick, as Rosindale recollected the ball off the deflection, he made a move, beat another defender and set a cross that found the head of fellow All-American candidate and countryman Paul Huckett (Grimsby, England/Grimsby College), as Huckett buried the cross in the back of the net to give the Bald Eagles an early 1-0 lead.

Goalkeeper Chad Feerrar (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) made 10 saves on the day, and turned away several opportunities as half time approached, with most of them coming off the foot of Millersville’s star player junior Sean McLaughlin. McLaughlin, along with Shane Seabrook were responsible for much of the Marauder’s offensive attack in the contest, and combined for four shots on net.

Things remained quiet on the offensive end for most of second half for the Haven, until the 71st minute, as Rosindale struck again finding the head of Lyndell Pompey (Narapima College/Wheeling Jesuit University) who snuck behind a Millersville defender on a free kick and headed his 2nd goal of the season, extending the Bald Eagle lead to 2-0 with less than 20 minutes left in the contest.

Millersville fought hard the last 20 minutes, resulting in several flurries of opportunities, but the Haven defense bent, but didn’t break. The quartet of Pompey, converted freshman forward Terrence Gochera (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley), senior Phil Liversedge (Darlington, England/Texas A&M International) and freshman Kevin McCune (Butler, Pa./Butler) along with Feerrar held the Millersville attack in check all day.

Lock Haven seemed to be settling in on a 2-0 defeat of Millersville, but the magical Rosindale simply wasn’t finished. With less than two minutes left in the contest, Rosindale picked up a loose ball in the midfield, and found the streaking Doug Moran (Butler, Pa./Butler) on a breakaway. Moran did the rest, putting the strike past the diving Matt Lagione for the first goal of his career, and sealed the deal on Lock Haven’s 3-0 defeat of Millersville.

Coach Doug Moore couldn’t be happier, as his pre-season expectations of the Bald Eagles capturing their 21st conference crown are only one game away.

In the pre-season, Moore said of his team’s chances of making capturing a PSAC title;

“I’ve never had a team with depth like this before here at LHU. I’m going to have headaches picking who makes the squad and who starts, but I’m not complaining,” Moore said. “It’s a good problem to have. We should really be able to make some noise this year.”

The win also brings the Bald Eagles closer to their 21st PSAC title, which is the most in conference history. Lock Haven will take on the winner of the other PSAC semi-final contest, with #1 East Stroudsburg taking on #4 West Chester at ESU. The contest is slated to kick off at 4 p.m. today. The highest remaining seed will host the championship at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
