Lady Eagles open season, their bid for an upset falls just short
 

Junior Lauren Kelshaw led the Lady Eagles tonight with a 17-point showing in the Haven's season opener.

INSTITUTE W.Va. – The Lock Haven University women’s basketball team (0-1) opened their season tonight on the road at the West Virginia State University Tip-Off Classic and their bid for an upset fell just short as the Lady Eagles lost 66-58 to the nation’s 21st ranked team in Glenville State College (2-0).

It marked the first game for Lock Haven under first year head coach Jennifer Smith.

The Haven played one of the nation’s best teams tough for 40 minutes and were led by junior Lauren Kelshaw’s (Weatherly, Pa./Weatherly) 17-point night.

Her 17-point showing tonight was a career high and is way up from her average a year ago, when she netted 4.2 points per game. Kelshaw also pulled in four rebounds.

The Lady Eagles trailed in the early minutes, but kept it close tying the contest at 10-10 with 12:57 to go in the first half.

With the game tied at 10-10 sophomore-transfer Casi Donelan (Fairfax, Va./Goldey-Beacom College) hit a three pointer that gave LHU it’s first lead of the night.

Moments later junior-transfer Marissa Elliott (Hagerstown, Md./Hagerstown C.C.) made a layout giving the Haven a five-point lead. The five point lead would be the Lady Eagles largest of the night.

LHU was only down four at the break, trailing No. 21 Glenville State 33-29.

With 18:10 to play in the contest the game was tied at 35-35, but Glenville State slowly pulled away from the Lady Eagles eventually taking the eight point win.

Donelan finished with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds while Elliott netted eight to go along with four boards.

Senior Michelle Mitchell (Scranton, Pa./Lackawanna C.C.) helped pace the Lady Eagles with a 12-point night.

Sophomore guard Malika Miller (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) had a game-high five assists and tied for a game-high four steals.

The Lady Eagles are back in action tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 17) at the West Virginia Tournament when the play the hosts, with game time set for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
