LHU Basketball - Men

Lock Haven falls at home to the University of Charleston 84-69

Freshman Tyrone Palmer led the Bald Eagle scoring effort as he chipped in 17 points on the night.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University Bald Eagle Men’s Basketball team (0-3, 0-0 PSAC West) fell in its third out of conference matchup in a row, as they lost to the University of Charleston 84-69.

Turnover woes plagued LHU in tonight’s loss as they lost the ball 18 times to the visiting Golden Eagles which turned in 26 points off those Bald Eagle mistakes.

Bench production also was a thorn in LHU’s side as UCM’s bench outscored the Bald Eagle bench by a 39-15 margin.

The first half was back and forth as both teams had leads for brief moments in the opening frame.

Charleston controlled the majority of the half though as they took an 11-9 lead over The Haven with 12 and change to play in the half and would cling to it as both teams headed to the locker room.

The Golden Eagles led 37-32 at the intermission as a John White layup found the bottom of the net for Charleston as time expired.

Both teams took back to the floor and a 15-7 run across the first five and a half minutes of the second half gave LHU the lead after a Billy Arre (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) trey broke a 44-44 tie.

The Bald Eagles would maintain that lead until 10:04 to go in the game when an Anthony Anderson three-ball hit nothing-but-the-bottom-of-the-cup to give Charleston the lead for good.

The Golden Eagles would rattle off 30 of the game’s next 46 points to come away with the win by a final score of 84-69.

Lock Haven had three scorers in double figures and was led in scoring by freshman guard Tyrone Palmer’s (Darby, Pa./Parkway) 17 point effort. Helping Palmer were junior Billy Arre (14) and senior Denny Mortimer (Silver Spring, Md./Mansfield) (13).

Junior big-man A.J. Zimmer (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) led the way on the glass with a game high nine rebounds as he had a near double-double effort with six points and those nine boards.

LHU was hot from the field as they shot 48.2% on the night, but free throw woes also cost the Bald Eagles as they could only convert on 56.7% of their attempts from the charity stripe.

Charleston was led by Austin Weatherington’s game high 18 points, and Kyle Garrison’s team high seven boards.

The Bald Eagles are next back in action on Wednesday, November 28 as they travel to Shepherd University to take on the Rams with tip off slated for 7:00 p.m.
