LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Junior Billy Arre (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) scored 23 points for Lock Haven but it wasn’t enough as visiting Kutztown rode off with a 69-64 victory in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover contest.
18 of Arre’s 23 points came in a first half which saw Lock Haven take control midway through and take a lead into the intermission
Freshman Eli Hanna (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) fired in a trey with ten and change to play in the opening frame which gave LHU a 16-15 lead.
A 7-0 run over the course of the next three and a half minutes would give The Haven their largest lead of the afternoon as Arre capped off the run with a jumper to give LHU the 23-15 advantage.
Both teams would then battle back and forth for the remainder of the first half but it would be the Bald Eagles taking a 35-28 lead into the locker room.
Kutztown would make their halftime changes count across the first four minutes of the second stanza as a 10-1 run would give them their first lead since the midway point of the first half.
The lead wouldn’t last long as a Denny Mortimer (Silver Spring, Md./Mansfield University) layup would knot the game up at 38 a piece.
The Bears would go on a mini 8-2 run to build their lead to it’s largest gap of the day as Nate Edward’s free throw went through the net to make the score 46-40.
LHU would draw it to within one point twice more but could never get over the hump as Kutztown would go away with a 69-64 victory against the Bald Eagles.
Kutztown was 5-10 from beyond the arc, with four of those coming in a second half which saw the Bears working outside the arc against LHU’s stingy zone defense.
LHU had an improved performance at the line as they shot 79.3% from the charity stripe and they shot 34% for the game from the field.
Arre led Lock Haven offensively as he netted 23 points. Guard Tyrone Palmer (Darby, Pa./Parkway) also had a strong effort as he just barely missed the double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Bald Eagles will take a break for the final week of classes and for finals week as they don’t play next until December 15 when they travel to Loretto to take on the St. Francis Red Flash. Tip off at DeGol Arena is slated for 7:00 p.m.
