LHU Basketball - Women

Lady Eagles win on the road at Point Park 64-46

Malika Miller was one of three players in double digits in LHU's 64-46 victory over Point Park. LHU was led on the evening by Lauren Kelshaw's 20 points.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Despite 23 turnovers, all but three of which came in the first half, Lock Haven University’s women’s basketball squad (5-8, 0-0 PSAC West) came back from downtown Pittsburgh with a 64-46 victory over Point Park University (2-11)

Turnovers were the story of the game as between the two teams, the ball was given away 57 times, but it was Lock Haven capitalizing off the 34 opportunities Point Park gave them to pick up 25 points off those takeaways en route to victory.

As both teams gave the ball to each other in the early goings, it was LHU taking full advantage as they jumped out to an 8-2 advantage with 14 and change to play in the first half.

But seven LHU turnovers across a six minute stretch would allow Point Park to go on a 6-0 run to knot the game up at eight a piece with 8:25 to play in the opening frame.

13 seconds later, a Michelle Mitchell (Scranton, Pa./Lackawanna C.C.) layup would find the bottom of the net and give LHU the 10-8 advantage but it wouldn’t last long as a trey from Point Park’s Marissa Reinhard would give the Pioneers an 11-10 lead.

Following a Lauren Kelshaw (Weatherly, Pa./Weatherly) turnover and Pioneer miss at the other end, Kelshaw would redeem herself by knocking down a jumper to give LHU the lead back at 12-11

The Haven would maintain that lead until 3:55 to go in half number one when a Brittney Wilson free throw would knot the game up at 14 a piece.

But that would be as close as LHU would allow Point Park to get as LHU would score four of the half’s final seven points to take an 18-17 lead into the intermission.

The Lady Eagles were led by a stellar defense which caused 16 first half Pioneer turnovers and held Point Park to an ice cold 18 percent from the field, while the offense was led by Kristen Kudrick’s (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) five points.

LHU would come out on fire in half number two as they started the second stanza with a 15-3 run across the half’s first ten plus minutes as they pushed their lead to 33-20.

A Reinhard layup would end the LHU run, but it wouldn’t take the Lady Eagles long to capitalize off more Pioneer turnovers and spark a 13-2 run which would effectively put the game out of reach at a 48-27 margin with 8:21 to play.

Point Park would try on multiple occasions to chip away at the Lock Haven lead, but ultimately were unable to do so as LHU would roll to 64-46 victory.

LHU’s defensive play was incredible on the evening as they held Point Park to a dismal 24 percent from the field and forced 34 turnovers.

The Haven was led on the evening by Kelshaw’s game high 20 points. Kelshaw got help from multiple sources as Mitchell and Malika Miller (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) were both in double digits with 13 and 10 points respectively.

LHU also got help from Kudrick’s near double-double effort as she scored nine points to go with her game high nine rebounds.

Point Park was led on the day by Brittney Wilson’s 16 point effort.

The win for LHU ended a three game losing streak.

LHU returns to action on Saturday, January 12, 2008 as they travel to Cheyney University for Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover action. Tip-off from the outskirts of Philadelphia is slated for 1 p.m.
