COLUMBUS, Ohio- One of Lock Haven University’s very own will be representing the Haven at the U.S. Junior National Track meet at Ohio State University.
Freshman Alaina Leonard (Dillsburg Pa/ Northern) of the Lady Eagles track and field team will be competing in the hammer throw at Jr. Nationals.
Leonard is looking to end her very successful rookie year with a good performance at OSU.
“My goal for Junior Nationals is to break the school record (161’8” held by Richelle Reed) or throw 51m (167’4”),” says Leonard.
These may seem like lofty goals for a freshman with only one season of college track and field behind her, but her coach, Heather Leverington, LHU co-head track and field coach agrees with Leonard that she has the ability to break the school record.
“Alaina has had a great freshmen year and is looking to complete her season on a high note,” said Leverington. “I think she has a great shot at breaking the school record this week, which is a great mark for a freshman.”
The freshman standout finished second at the PSAC championships in the hammer throw with a heave of 159 feet.
“She is a hard worker and has posted marks that I have never had a freshman achieve. I think Alaina can gain experience competing with the best kids in the U.S. in her age group,” Leverington added about her standout freshman.
“I am excited and looking forward to an awesome experience” says Leonard who is anxiously awaiting a big weekend ahead of her.
Leonard is set to compete in the hammer throw this Friday, June 20th, at 2:00pm EST. Check back to HavenSports.com for updates on her performance.
