Gumby receives Arthur Ashe Jr. Award
 

FAIRFAX, Va. – JaKia Gumby (Middletown, Pa. /Middletown), a member of the Lock Haven University women’s track and field team recently received a very prestigious honor as the junior thrower earned an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Award.

Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr. and his commitment to education as well as athletics, the Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholarship is given to only 75 athletes nationwide is a quite an honor for Gumby

The award is given to African American student-athletes who have made remarkable achievements both athletically, as well as academically.

Gumby more than did her part this season. Her achievements in field alone were impressive.

At the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships, she finished second in discus throw, third in shot-put, and fifth in the hammer throw. During the indoor track and field season Gumby won the shot put at the PSAC Indoor Championships.

Along with a stellar year in the throwing circle, Gumby, a Sports Administration major also excelled academically. She was also named a PSAS scholar-athlete.

To be eligible for the award, one must maintain a grade point average of 3.2 or higher.
