Douglas C.
Spatafore
Jr. begins
his third
year as the
Director of
Sports
Information
at Lock
Haven
Univeresity.
Spatafore,
a 2006
graduate of
Lock Haven
oversees the
media
relations
for The
Haven’s 18
intercollegiate
sports
teams,
including
LHU’s NCAA
Division I
field hockey
and
wrestling
teams. Lock
Haven’s
other 16
athletic
teams
compete at
the NCAA
D-II level.
Spatafore,
who
graduated
from Lock
Haven in the
May of 2006
with a
Bachelor of
Arts in
Communication
Media serves
as the
primary
media
contact for
all 18
athletic
teams, while
serving as
the primary
liaison for
local, state
and national
media.
He is
responsible
for the
promotion of
Lock Haven
athletics,
oversees the
school’s
athletic
portion of
the website
(HavenSports.com),
produces all
media guides
and game-day
programs
among all
other
day-to-day
Sports
Information
office
duties.
Spatafore
serves as
the official
scorer and
statistician
for all of
Lock Haven’s
home games,
matches and
events was
well as any
post-season
tournament
LHU may be
hosting.
Spatafore
is also a
key
contributor
to the
Perspective,
Lock Haven’s
alumni
magazine.
Prior to
his hire at
Director of
Sports
Information
at Lock
Haven,
Spatafore, a
former cross
country and
track &
field
performer at
The Haven
was the
graduate
assistant
under Al
Weston.
Spatafore
worked under
the past two
Sports
Information
Directors at
LHU, having
also worked
for Danielle
Barney, now
Lock Haven’s
Assistant
Athletic
Director.
Most
recently,
Spatafore
was busy
during the
2008-09
school year,
as Lock
Haven and
its athletes
enjoyed a
remarkable
run.
Recently,
he helped
promote the
Lady Eagles
National
Championship
softball
team and
Lock Haven’s
National
Runner up
lacrosse
team. He was
also on hand
to see the
Bald Eagle
Baseball
team make
its first
appearance
in the
Pennsylvania
State
Athletic
Conference (PSAC)
playoffs.
At the 2009
NCAA D-II
Softball
National
Championship,
Spatafore
contributed
to live
video-webcasts
that aired
via NCAA.com,
while also
aiding in
the
production
of the
National
Television
broadcast of
the
Championship
game on CBS
College
Sports
television.
In 2008-09,
Spatafore
directed all
media
relations
duties as
the host for
several
major
post-season
tournaments
including
the
Northeast
Conference
(NEC) D-I
Field Hockey
Tournament,
the Eastern
Wrestling
League (EWL)
Championships,
the PSAC
Softball
Championships,
the NCAA
D-II
Atlantic
Region
Softball
Championships,
and the PSAC
Lacrosse
Champioships.
Lock Haven
also hosted
a NCAA D-II
First Round
Championship
lacrosse
game.
Spatafore
has been a
huge force
behind Lock
Haven’s
success with
webcasting
numerous
athletic
events via
the
internet. He
assists in
overseeing
the schools
athletics
radio (Haven
Sports
Radio) and
video
webcasts (HAVENc@st),
which have
attracted
viewers and
listeners
around the
world.
Spatafore
helped
broadcast
live from
the last
three NCAA
D-II
Softball
College
World Series
sites
including
Salem, Va.
(2009)
Akron, Ohio
(2007) and
Houston
(2008) via
Haven Sports
Radio.
He has
helped to
promote the
perennial
power Lady
Eagle
softball
program and
has helped
in the
promotion 42
athletes to
All-American
status in
just two
years.
Spatafore
has served
as the head
media
contact for
the 2007 and
2008 NCAA
Division I
Northeast
Conference
(NEC) Field
Hockey
Tournaments.
Lock Haven
also hosted
the 2008
Pennsylvania
State
Athletic
Conference (PSAC)
softball
tournament.
Currently
Spatafore is
gearing up
to host the
2010 NCAA
Division II
Swimming &
Diving
National
Championships
at CT Branin
Natatorium
in Canton,
Ohio.
Spatafore
holds
profession
credentials
from CoSIDA
and is a
voting
member on
the National
Collegiate
Baseball
Writers
Association
(NCBWA)
Atlantic
Region
committee.
He is also
the
coordinator
for
Daktronics
Inc.
All-Atlantic
Region
softball.
While at
Lock Haven,
Spatafore, a
communication
media
graduate,
served as
sports
editor for
the Eagle
Eye, Lock
Haven’s
student
newspaper.
In addition,
he wrote
feature
stories for
the
Perspective,
was active
with WLHU
Radio, and
was also a
member of
the Society
for
Collegiate
Journalists
(SCJ).
Spatafore
also
received the
Dr. Saundra
K. Hybels
award for
being an
outstanding
senior who
is active on
and
off-campus,
and for
maintaining
a high grade
point
average in
his major
upon his
graduation.
