2003 Women's Lacrosse Results

Philadelphia University 11, Lock Haven 9
Philadelphia, Pa.  -  April 30, 2003

(Philadelphia, Pa.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania lacrosse team (8-8, 3-3 PSAC) concluded its season on the road at Philadelphia University (9-6), falling 11-9 in the non-conference contest.  This is the first Lady Eagle lacrosse season at or above .500 since going 7-7 in the 1996 campaign.  During the 1996 season, LHU second-year head coach Kristen Geissler was a student-athlete on the lacrosse team.
The Lady Eagles had a three-goal deficit to fight entering into the second half after Philadelphia scored four unanswered goals to close out the first half. LHU had cut the lead to just one with a goal by Amy Richter (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) in the 44th minute, but the Rams went on a three-goal run in the next ten minutes to stretch out the lead once again. Richter scored again with five minutes to go, and Diana Strizki (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) tacked on another goal in the final minute but could not bridge the gap and ended on the low end of the 11-9 score.
Richter paced LHU with four goals and an assist and Strizki added a pair of goals. Megan Dwyer (Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley), Anne Marie Ritzell (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) and Katie Stewartz (Boyertown/Boyertown) all added goals in the Haven’s effort.

Lock Haven owned a 6-3 advantage after one half of play, but the Huskies came back strong in the second stanza, putting up two quick goals to creep within one score, 6-5.  The Lady Eagles countered by putting up four goals, including two by Megan Dwyer (Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley), to Bloomsburg’s next one to spread the gap back to a four-goal lead at 10-6.  In search of the come-from-behind victory, the Huskies exploded in the final 10 minutes of the game to rally for six goals, including a five-goal unanswered span to move ahead by one goal, 11-10, with just 49 seconds remaining.  Following the draw control battle at midfield, Lock Haven’s Dwyer earned the ball on the out-of-bounds line and flicked it ahead to Sara Daley (Pho
enixville/Spring Ford), who took on traffic in front of the goal but still managed to get the ball by the defense to tie up the game at 11-11 with 22 seconds to go.  Bloomsburg got the ball off the next draw control, but The Haven turned away two advances to the goal before a foul was called, setting up Megan Pry with the free position shot on goal.  Pry converted, scoring on the bounce to the far corner to give the Huskies the one-goal win in their first conference contest.

Lock Haven 20, Lycoming 12
Charlotte Smith Field  -  Lock Haven, Pa.  -  March 19, 2003

(Lock Haven, Pa.) – The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women’s lacrosse team (1-2) garnered its first win of the season over neighbor Lycoming College, 20-12, on Charlotte Smith Field this afternoon.  The Lady Eagles, led by Diana Strizki (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon C.R.) with six goals and Megan Dwyer (Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) with five goals, defeated the Warriors (0-1) in their season opener.

The Haven opened up scoring just five minutes into play with a Dwyer goal from the outside.  The Lady Eagles’ Strizki quickly regained possession of the ball and scored again only 11 seconds after the first goal.   Lycoming’s leading scorer Lauren Evangelist retaliated shortly after scoring unassisted after nearly six minutes of play.  Evangelist would go on to score six goals in the effort.

After back-to-back Lycoming goals by Ashley Rowe and Evangelist, the Lady Eagles found themselves ahead by one, 7-6, with less than 10 minutes to play in the first half.  In the remaining minutes of the first half goals from Ann Marie Ritzell (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook), Sara Daley (Phoenixville/Spring Ford) (2), Katie Stewartz (Boyertown/Boyertown) and Dwyer stretched the Haven lead from one to six.  With one minute remaining, Rowe found the back of the net for the Warriors closing the half with a score of 12-7.

The second stanza belonged to the Lady Eagles where they stretched their lead to as much as 11.   LHU’s Amy Richter (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) opened up the scoring in the second half.  Strizki, who scored four of her six goals, and Dwyer who put in three of her five scored the rest of the goals in the second half.

In goal, Lock Haven’s Laura Carr (Warminster/Archbishop Wood) tallied three saves, while Lycoming’s Laurie Rooney registerd 10 saves.

Limestone College 7, Lock Haven 6
Charlotte Smith Field  -  Lock Haven, Pa.  -  March 18, 2003

(Lock Haven, Pa.) – Despite three goals from Diana Strizki (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon C.R.), the Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania women’s lacrosse team (0-2) was edged out by undefeated Limestone College (6-0) by one goal, 7-6, in its home opener this evening on Charlotte Smith Field.  Limestone entered the contest outscoring its opponents by an average of 11.0 goals per game, and the one-goal differential was the closest game yet for the Saints this season.
The Haven opened up play with the advantage, scoring four minutes into the game on a free position score by Strizki. Strizki again bypassed the Saints’ keeper to find the back of the net on another score from the top of the arc within the first six minutes.  Limestone answered quickly, however, and midway through the opening half had taken a 4-2 lead off goals by Pam Gateau, Stephanie Allen, Kathy Campbell and Meghan Dennehy. Limestone’s Gateau would add one more to the tally before the half, but LHU’s tandem of Strizki and Megan Dwyer (Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley) combined for three goals in the latter minutes of the first stanza to tie things up at 5-5 entering into the break.
Limestone came out of the intermission strong, tacking on goals by Dennehy and Campbell within the first four minutes of the half to jump out in the lead, 7-5.  Possession bounced back and forth throughout the remainder of the second half, but the Haven made a strong push near the close.  Amy Richter (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) took a pass from behind the net from Anne Marie Ritzell (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) and sent it into goal with just 1:52 left in the game to bring LHU to within one goal.  The Lady Eagles were able to regain possession again within the last minute, but the Limestone defense cleared the ball and used up the rest of the clock for the win.
In goal, Lock Haven’s Laura Carr (Warminster/Archbishop Wood) totaled nine saves while Limestone’s Jackie Weaver registered 13 stops.
The Lady Eagle lacrosse team next hosts Lycoming College tomorrow, Wed., March 19, at 2 p.m. on Charlotte Smith Field.
