Men's Basketball Shoots Well, Not Well Enough in Loss, 82-60

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Despite 21 points from senior Joe Walker (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) and 13 second-half points from sophomore James Chappell (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area), the Lock Haven University men’s basketball team (0-1) fell victim to a much taller Grand Valley State University team (1-0), 80-62 tonight at Thomas Field House.

The Bald Eagles shot for a 44 percent clip (22-50), better than all but six of their games last season, but lost the battle in the paint, 42-22. Redshirt freshman 6-foot-10 center Callistus Eziukwu accounted for many of those 42, netting a game-high 23 overall for the Lakers. Grand Valley State shot 59.3 (32-54) percent for the game.

The Haven stuck with GVSU early on, thanks to 13 first-half points for Walker and fellow senior Eddie Christiano’s (Coal Township, Pa/Lourdes Regional) contributions, joining Walker and Chappell in double-figures with 11.

Lock Haven held a 9-8 lead in the early going, just over five minutes in, but never saw the lead again. LHU brought the gap back to three at 34-31 on a jumper by Chappell for the first second-half points.

The Lakers then sandwiched two 10-point runs around free throws by Michael Dye (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley), pushing the lead to 54-33 with 13:30 left. The Haven never got it any closer than 13 from that point on.

Walker, Chappell, Christiano, Dye and the rest of the Bald Eagles are back in action Sunday, Nov. 21 at Division I Youngstown State University at 7 p.m.
