Three lead changes later the Rock took a 58-57 lead on a layup by Glenn Reepmeyer.  Lock Haven was unable to reverse the trend, as Slippery Rock punched out to as much as an 11-point lead, 77-66, with just under four minutes left to play.  The Bald Eagles would move to within three points, 80-77, with 1:30 remaining, but the Rock’s free throws widened the gap for the 89-80 final.

The Bald Eagles are now 4-21 overall and 3-8 in the PSAC Western Division.
Clarion had taken an 11-4 lead early, but the Bald Eagles evened up the game then pushed ahead to take over the lead at 8:05 on a made free throw by Julien Grandgirard (Vesoul, France/Dayton Christian).  Lock Haven held on to a modest lead, growing to just five points, until a three-pointer late cut that advantage to just two points, 29-27. A free throw by James Chappell (Coatesville/Coatesville) with just 27 seconds left put the lead to 30-27 for Lock Haven by the intermission.
The Golden Eagles dug into that lead early in the second half and tied things up then moved ahead, 35-33, at 16:15 . After two more ties, Lock Haven grabbed the advantage back for good after Chappell nailed a three-pointer from the wing for the 40-37 lead with 13:47 remaining.  A three-pointer by Grandgirard at 5:20 jump-started an eight point run for the Bald Eagles that put the game firmly out of reach, eventually pocketing the 68-57 victory.

2/18/04  -  Shippensburg University 64,  Lock Haven 45           >>>box score

(Shippensburg, Pa.) –  The Lock Haven University men’s basketball team dropped a 64-45 league contest on the road against Shippensburg University (9-15, 1-8 PSAC West).  The loss puts the Bald Eagles at 3-21 overall and 2-8 in the PSAC West.
A close game throughout much of the first half, Shippensburg’s lead was just one point, 23-22, with 4:20 remaining. A five-point Raider run was broken up by a jumper by James Chappell (Coatesville/Coatesville), but Shippensburg followed that up with another five unanswered tallies to take the 33-24 halftime lead.
That lead held, and LHU would get no closer than seven points (35-28 at 14:58 ) in the second half of action.  Shippensburg built a 15 point, 47-32, advantage with just over seven minutes to go.  It looked as if the Bald Eagles were going to challenge at the four-minute mark after a bucket by Chappell and an Eddie Christiano (Coal Township/Lourdes Regional) three-pointer cut into the Raider lead to come within nine points, 50-41.  After another minute went by without either team scoring, Shippensburg moved back into a double figure lead with a basket by Gary Vaincoeur.  Vaincoeur’s points opened the path for another five point Shippensburg run, eventually putting the game out of reach as time wore down.
The Haven was out-rebounded 42-31, including a crucial 15-5 difference in offensive boards.  Both teams had an average night shooting, Lock Haven making 38-percent from the floor and Shippensburg posting a 41.9-percent outing.
James Chappell and Christopher Ruff (Halifax/Halifax) paced the Bald Eagle efforts, both registering 11 points. Chappell also led LHU with nine boards, four assists and three steals.  Eddie Christiano contributed nine points and Joe Walker (Lock Haven/Central Mountain) had seven rebounds.

2/14/04  -  #23 California (Pa.) University 54,  Lock Haven 52          >>>box score

(California, Pa.) –  California made five of six free throws in the final 27 seconds to help seal the 54-52 win over the Lock Haven University men’s basketball team (3-20, 2-7 PSAC West) in a contest that was tight the entire way.  California (Pa.) University, ranked 23rd in the latest NABC/Division II Bulletin National Rankings, improved to 18-5 overall and 8-1 in the PSAC West.
After Christopher Ruff (Halifax/Halifax) brought on the game’s 12th tie with a pair of made free throws with 1:21 remaining, California’s Michael Johnson scored two of his game-high 18 points to give the home team the 49-47lead at the 0:47 mark.  The Haven turned over the ball on offense, then two made freebies by the Vulcans’ Sharif Bray after an off-the-ball foul gave California a four-point lead at 51-47.  Eddie Christiano (Coal Township/Lourdes Regional) would bring LHU to within one, nailing a clutch three-pointer for his only points of the game with 14 seconds left.
The Haven was forced to foul to regain possession, and Bray was sent to the line where he again made both, giving the home team the 53-50 advantage with 12 seconds to play.  Back on the offensive, another trey by Christiano was off the mark and Brian Rieben (Collegeville/Devon Prep) followed it up with the rebound and short jumper to draw back to within one point, 53-52, with two seconds on the clock.
Another trip to the free throw line for California resulted in one-of-two.  Regaining the ball back for the last second attempt at the win, Lock Haven could not get it to fall, bringing the final to 54-52.
With the majority of the game’s statistics balanced on both sides, the Vulcans were able to capitalize on a total of 20 Haven turnovers compared with only seven California give-aways. Key free throw shooting by California in the final minute of play also helped edge out the victory.

Lock Haven’s James Chappell (Coatesville/Coatesville) and Christopher Ruff led the effort, both scoring 17 points. Chappell shot 6-for-7 from the floor, including three treys, and also added five rebounds.            The Bald Eagles went into the halftime break down by only seven points, 33-26.  The teams traded points early on in the second half and Lock Haven was able to keep the deficit in single digits up until the 12:07 mark, when Indiana’s Donovan Thomas hit a jumper for two of his game-high 26 points to post the 51-41 lead.  Indiana would tack on eight more unanswered points, jumping out into a 59-41 lead with 8:09 remaining to play.  Lock Haven fell silent again after stopping the previous run, unable to stop Indiana from another run, this time ten points, before the eventual 74-52 score.

(Lock Haven, Pa.) – The University of the District of Columbia (15-7) outlasted the Lock Haven University men’s basketball team in a double-overtime thriller, 94-86, this evening in Thomas Fieldhouse.  The non-conference loss drops the Bald Eagles to 3-18 on the season.
Lock Haven followed up a lackluster first-half performance that included a 1-for-11 performance from behind the arc with a spirited second-half comeback, clawing its way back from a 11-point, 39-28, halftime deficit.  The Bald Eagles were finally able to match the Firebirds’ score, 63-63, on a three-pointer by Corky McMullen ( Castile , N.Y./Letchworth Central) with 3:38 remaining.  As time wore down, Darren Cannon (Wallenpaupack/Wallenpaupack) made two free throws with 30 seconds left for the 69-67 lead. UDC’s Rasheim Wright had the answer, scoring two of his game high 36 points with 18 seconds to go to tie things back up at 69-69.  The last second LHU attempt fell short, ushering the first extra period.
The Bald Eagles struck first in the initial overtime stanza, going up by five points, 77-72, with 1:35 remaining.  The Firebirds’ Dion Thompson nailed two long range jumpers to bring the game closer, cutting the Haven’s lead to 79-78 with his second of the period at 0:47. Darren Cannon made one of two free throw to edge back out into a two-point advantage, but the Firebirds’ Wright came up big again, knocking down a pair of freebies to knot things up at 80-80 at 0:27.  Lock Haven missed the chance to regain the lead with 17 seconds left, not able to convert on two free throws, as the period ended deadlocked at 80-80.

(Edinboro, Pa.) – A career high of 28 points by Darren Cannon (Wallenpaupack/Wallenpaupack) was not enough to lift the Lock Haven University men’s basketball team (3-17, 2-5 PSAC West) past Edinboro University (12-10, 6-1) as the Bald Eagles fell, 81-64, in PSAC Western Division action this afternoon.
The Bald Eagles were down by just five points at the break, 36-31, after an almost evenly played half.            Edinboro held a 46-28 rebounding advantage and shot 41.5-percent on the game.  The Haven forced more turnovers then it gave up, 20-14, but the lackluster first-half performance and the disparity on the boards had created too much distance.
Lock Haven had three players hit double figures led by a double-double from Christopher Ruff (Halifax/Halifax) with 12 points and 11 rebounds.  Darren Cannon (Wallenpaupack/Wallenpaupack) contributed 13 points, including three treys, and Eddie Christiano (Coal Township/Lourdes Regional) was good for 11 points.
Edinboro’s Rob Sims led all scorers with 16 points.  Will Winegarner added 14 points while Dan Granbill pocketed 12 points.

1/7/04  -  Lock Haven 59, Fairmont State College 54              >>>box score

(Lock Haven, Pa.) – The Lock Haven men’s basketball team stunned Fairmont State College (8-1) by capturing the 59-54 victory this evening in Thomas Fieldhouse. A solid team effort translated into the win, as two good free throws by Quentin Terry (Leola/Central York) with six seconds remaining gave LHU the five point cushion and the edge it needed to wrap up its first win of the season.
Entering into tonight’s match-up with Fairmont State College, the Bald Eagles had nothing to lose, still winless on the season and facing an undefeated opponent. With one half expired, however, the Bald Eagles had shot 47.8-percent and held Fairmont to just 34.6-percent, keeping themselves on pace with the Falcons. The two teams went into intermission with the Haven in the lead, 28-26.
Unlike the previous game’s second-half shortcomings, the Bald Eagles kept the pressure on and went up by eight points after just five minutes into the new period, 35-27.  Fairmont State answered, Johnathan Denham hitting a three-pointer and Lance King making good on a pair of free throws and then a jumper.  A bucket by James Carpenter gave the Falcons a one-point, 38-37 lead at 10:51, but Carpenter missed two free throws just 34 seconds later to stretch out the advantage. On the ensuing possession, the Bald Eagles’ Adam Holtzer (Matamoras/Delaware Valley) hit a trey from the deep left corner, bouncing the lead back in favor of LHU, 40-38.
The Bald Eagles would not relinquish the lead again, holding on to the single-digit advantage as time began to slip off the clock.  With 43 seconds remaining, Lock Haven was up by three, 54-51, when Darren Cannon (Wallenpaupack/Wallenpaupack) was fouled. Cannon hit both shots for the five point lead.
Down on the other side of the court, Fairmont State’s Denham sliced along the baseline and dropped in the layup, drawing the foul and completing the three-point play to make the Haven lead 56-54 with 22 seconds to play.
LHU’s Durell Moore (Wallingford/Strath Haven) made the second half of a two-shot trip to the free throw line for the 57-54 lead with 17 seconds remaining. Fairmont pushed the ball up the court and Joe Hardin attempted the long range jumper Terry swatted the ball away. An offensive rebound and put back attempt by DeAndre Walker rattled off the rim and was brought down by Terry, who was fouled in the process.
With six seconds left, Terry nailed both freebies for the five point, 59-54, lead.  A last second shot was no good by Fairmont
, as the Haven collected the 2003-04 season’s first win.
The Bald Eagles shot 45.1-percent on the game while holding Fairmont State to 34-percent. Fairmont held a slight 41-37 edge in rebounding while turnovers were almost even at 19 against Fairmont and 18 against The Haven.
Terry led LHU with 13 points, six boards and five steals.  Moore added 12 points and four rebounds, while Eddie Chri
