Tournament - First Round

(California, Pa.) -
The Bald Eagle men’s basketball team
fell, 63-60, to top-seeded California (Pa.)
University (24-7) in the first round of the PSAC
Tournament in a down-to-the-wire ball game at
California’s Hamer Hall this evening.
Entering the tournament as the fourth seed
in the Western Division, The Haven out-shot and
out-rebounded the Vulcans, but California hit
23-of-28 free throws, including a pair with two
seconds left by Ryan Stefanski, to capture the
win.
A physical and
intense game from the opening tip, neither team
was able to stretch out a sizeable lead in the
first half which saw one tie and two lead changes.
The largest advantage went to California
with a six-point lead with just under five minutes
remaining, but LHU clawed its way back to within
one point, 30-29, with less than a minute left off
a put-back by Quentin Terry (Leola/Central
York). A short jumper by Cal’s Ishmieal
Kamara on the next trip down the floor pushed the
home team’s cushion back to three tallies,
32-29, by the intermission.
The Vulcans came out
of half-time firing, taking a six-point lead, but
the see-saw battle continued as LHU answered with
a string of three consecutive three-pointers
compliments of Eddie Christiano (Coal
Township/Lourdes Regional) and Jonathan
Ogden (Williamsport/Penn College) to bring the
game to the first of four second-half ties.
Within the five-minute mark, a long-range
field goal by Ryan Stefanski put the Vulcans ahead
by four, 59-55, and two freebies by Stefanski on
the consecutive series matched Cal’s largest
lead of the game at six.
A jumper by Christopher Ruff
(Halifax/Halifax) and a trey from Jeromy
Yetter (Lewistown/Indian Valley) with 1:45
remaining sliced the deficit back to one point.
Two missed free
throws by the Vulcans’ Tom Frederick kept The
Haven within striking distance, 61-60, and with 17
seconds remaining a California turnover gave the
ball back to LHU to try for the win.
The Bald Eagles got the ball to Holtzer,
who drove into the lane and put up the shot in
traffic. Despite the effort, no foul was called
and LHU was forced to foul on the rebound to stop
the clock. Stefanski drained both freebies with 2.2 seconds remaining,
and the Haven’s last second attempt went
unsuccessful to send the Bald Eagles home on the
low end of the 63-60 margin.
Holtzer paced LHU
with 13 points, while both Kevin DeVan
(Harrisburg/Susquehanna Township) and Ruff
added eight points apiece.
DeVan led LHU with nine rebounds.

(Slippery Rock, Pa.) -
The Bald Eagle basketball team (10-16, 6-6 PSAC
West) held Slippery Rock University (8-17, 2-10
PSAC West) to only three points in the game's
final nine minutes to overcome a 13-point deficit
and capture a berth to the PSAC playoffs with the
55-50 victory on the road. In what will be
LHU's first trip to the conference playoffs since
the 1996 season, the Bald Eagles earned the fourth
seed in the Western Division and will travel to
face top-seeded California (Pa.) University (23-7,
10-2 PSAC West) on Tuesday, March 4, at 8 p.m.
With LHU down by a margin
of 28-19 after the first half, The Rock improved
its lead to as much as 15 points midway into the
final stanza. Things appeared dismal at the
nine-minute mark, as The Haven was behind by 13
points, 47-34. Back-to-back three-pointers
compliments of Kristopher Holtzer (Matamoras/Delaware Valley)and Jonathan Ogden (Williamsport/Penn
College) jump-started the LHU offense, however,
as they went on a 12-point run to cut the deficit
to only one point with five minutes remaining.
Another trey, this time from Kevin DeVan
(Harrisburg/Susquehanna Township), gave the
Bald Eagles their only lead of the game at 1:45,
53-50, and two made free throws by Holtzer with
two seconds remaining sealed the come-from-behind
victory for LHU.
DeVan led LHU with 20
points and six boards, followed by Holtzer and
Ogden, who both added eight points. Christopher
Ruff (Halifax/Halifax) tapped in with seven
points and five boards underneath on the
blocks.

(Clarion, Pa.) -
The Bald Eagle cagers (9-16) improved to 5-6 in
the PSAC West after edging out Clarion University
(18-7, 7-3 PSAC West), 70-68, this afternoon on
the road. Kristopher Holtzer's (Matamoras/Delaware Valley)
jumper with 1.2 seconds remaining capped off a
25-point game for the Haven senior and gave LHU
the last-second victory.
A game of large
runs, LHU had gone into intermission with a
nine-point, 40-31, advantage after jumping out
into the lead in the final six minutes of the
half. Clarion dragged the margin back down to one
point in the opening minutes of the second stanza,
but LHU again stretched out the advantage to 12
points, this time with just under 10 minutes
remaining. The Golden Eagles chipped away again,
and with three minutes to go, tied up the score at
66-66.
Clarion's Rollie Smith
hit a jumper and was fouled with a minute left,
but the extra point did not fall and LHU's Christopher
Ruff (Halifax/Halifax) answered with a
bucket in the paint off a dish from Holtzer to
make it 68-68. With six seconds remaining,
the ball was back in the Bald Eagles' possession
after a defensive stop, and this time Ruff fed
Holtzer, who drained the short jumper to boost LHU
out in front, 70-68. With only 1.2 seconds
remaining on the clock, Clarion's efforts fell
short and The Haven went on to take the divisional
victory.
Holtzer led LHU
with 25 points along with 13 rebounds. Ruff
had a big game on the blocks, connecting for 19
points and 11 boards. Kevin DeVan
(Harrisburg/Susquehanna Township) totaled
eight points and three assists, and Eddie Christiano (Coal
Township/Lourdes Regional) added seven
tallies.

(Lock Haven, Pa.) -
The Bald Eagles (8-16, 4-6 PSAC West) remain in a
tie for fourth place in the PSAC West with
tonight's 79-72 victory over the visiting Raiders
of Shippensburg University (6-18, 2-7 PSAC
West). Despite decimated numbers due to
injury, Lock Haven pulled through a close second
half of play to capture the victory.
The Haven owned a
four-point lead at intermission, and stretched it
out to 10 points on a quick run to open the second
stanza. Shippensburg hung around, however,
slicing the lead back down to as small as three
points with 2:40 remaining. A Shippensburg
technical foul gave the momentum back to the Bald
Eagles, however, as Kevin DeVan
(Harrisburg/Susquehanna Township) hit both
freebies to boost the lead back up to five.
A pair of short jumpers from Jonathan Ogden (Williamsport/Penn
College) on consecutive trips down the
floor helped the advantage up to nine points with
just under two minutes to go. The Haven made eight
of ten free throws in the time remaining to keep
the Raiders at bay, leaving with the 79-72
victory.
Four Bald Eagles recorded
double-figure scoring paced by DeVan with 19
points. Sophomore forward Joe Walker (Lock
Haven/Central Mountain) had a big evening with
a matching set of 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Kristopher Holtzer (Matamoras/Delaware Valley)
totaled 14 points, while Christopher
Ruff (Halifax/Halifax) bucketed 12 points in
the win.

(Lock Haven, Pa.) -
The difference between the first and second halves
was as different as night and day for the Bald
Eagles (7-16, 3-6 PSAC West), but unfortunately
the result was the same as California (Pa.)
University (20-7, 7-2 PSAC West) defeated Lock
Haven 60-58 in Thomas Fieldhouse this evening.
The Bald Eagles got
off to a slow start, shooting only 17-percent, but
were still in the game by half, down 27-16 after a
low-scoring first period. In the second
stanza, California built on their half-time
advantage to go ahead by as much as 20 points with
15 minutes remaining. Slowly, Lock Haven
chipped away at that lead and had it down to 10
points with just five minutes left. A
three-pointer by Eddie Christiano (Coal
Township/Lourdes Regional) at the four-minute
mark dropped the deficit into single-digits for
LHU, down by just seven. Another
trey, this time by Jonathan Ogden (Williamsport/Penn
College) with just over a minute remaining,
sliced the lead to three. A missed shot and
a turnover on the opposite end put the ball back
into LHU's possession with 38 seconds left in the
game.
A California
foul with eight ticks to go sent Kevin DeVan
(Harrisburg/Susquehanna Township) to the
line, and after two made buckets, the lead was
down to one, 59-58. LHU fouled before the
ball was inbounded, and the Vulcans' Gerrmar
Ballard hit one of two. Ogden snared the
carom from the missed shot and sent it down court.
With just three seconds to go after a timeout, the
final shot would not fall for the Bald Eagles and
they closed out the game on the low end of the
60-58 score.
Kristopher Holtzer (Matamoras/Delaware Valley)
paced The Haven with 21 points, while DeVan added
13 points and seven boards. Ogden
contributed 11 points including three long-range
shots along with six rebounds.

the road this evening. Kevin DeVan
(Harrisburg/Susquehanna Township) dropped in
a team-high 20 points while Christopher
Ruff (Halifax/Halifax) added a career-best 18

The Bald Eagles actually
outscored Indiana (Pa.), 38-34, in the second half
but a 12-point halftime disadvantage played
against their chances. IUP held a lead as
large as 15 points at the 13-minute mark, while
Lock Haven was only able to slice the margin down
as low as four-points twice -- at three minutes
and 25 seconds remaining.
DeVan paced LHU with 20 points

- The Bald Eagle basketball
team (7-14) traveled down to the nation's capital
to take on the University of District of Columbia
(16-5), falling 87-67 to the Firebirds.
The game
broke out into a contest of flare and physicality,
with the Firebirds hitting 60-percent of their
shots in the first half, mostly short jumpers but
including five three-pointers, while the Haven
checked in at a modest 33.3-percent with seven
turnovers but was only down, 44-33, after one
period.
Things
unraveled quickly in the second half, however, as
UDC's hot shooting touch continued, and the Bald
Eagles committed 15 turnovers leading to the
eventual 87-67 final. Kevin DeVan
(Harrisburg/Susquehanna Township) led LHU
with 18 points and four assists, while Jonathan Ogden (Williamsport/Penn

- Despite a late, second-half

unable to put away the win against Edinboro
University, 69-66, in conference action at Thomas
Fieldhouse this evening. Kristopher Holtzer (Matamoras/Delaware Valley)
tallied 18 points and nine rebounds to bolster the Bald
Eagle offense in the late drive.
Down
64-57 with one minute

Kevin DeVan
(Harrisburg/Susquehanna Township)
deposited two
points on a jumper, pulling Lock Haven within in
five. After two made free throws by
Edinboro's Duke Gartrell, Holtzer added another two

DeVan registered a three-point play, closing the gap to three.
The Bald Eagles controlled the ball with just nine
seconds remaining, but a last-second shot attempt
careened off the rim, leaving the Fighting Scots in the
lead at the final buzzer,
69-66.
Three Bald Eagles were in the double digits,
including Holtzer with his 18-point effort. DeVan

The Bald Eagle cagers (7-12, 3-3 PSAC West) edged
out Pitt-Johnstown (8-12) in a 78-77 nail-biter in
non-conference action this evening in Thomas
Fieldhouse. Jonathan Ogden (Williamsport/Penn
College) poured in 21 second-half points to
spark the come back and lead the Haven to the
victory.
Down by five points after
the first period, the Bald Eagles slowly chipped
away at the Mountain Cat advantage and whittled it
all the way down to a tied game at 48-48 with
12:39 remaining. Pitt-Johnstown hurried back onto
the offensive, bouncing back into an eight-point
lead with just under nine minutes remaining.
In a matter of two minutes, however, lead changed
sides as the Bald Eagles put up nine points and
gained the momentum. Tied at 70-70 with 3:16 left
in the game, LHU's Kristopher Holtzer (Matamoras/Delaware Valley)
and Ogden hit back-to-back three-pointers to
provide a five-point cushion. The Mountain Cats
hung around though, and playing off a hot shooting
hand from Eugene Wilson (31 pts.), squeezed
themselves right back into the game.
In the final
minute with LHU in the lead, 78-76, UPJ's Wilson
was fouled and made one-of-two at the free throw
line. A scramble after the missed second shot gave
the ball back to UPJ, who inbounded but could not
get the shot to fall. LHU's Joe Walker (Lock
Haven/Central Mountain) was able to get a hand
on the rebound, swatting the ball away from danger
and down court to secure the slim victory for the
Bald Eagles.
Ogden posted a
career-best 25 point effort including three
long-range jumpers. Holtzer added 17 points
along with seven boards and three assists. Three
players contributed eight points each, Christopher

The Bald Eagle cagers (5-12, 2-3 PSAC West) saw a
10-point halftime lead disappear as Clarion
University (15-4, 4-0 PSAC West) executed the
come-from-behind 63-60 win in Thomas Fieldhouse to
remain perfect in the conference's Western
Division. The first portion of the second
half saw the Haven with a comfortable 15-point
lead, but a see-saw battle soon erupted as the
Golden Eagles fought their way back into the game.
Of the seven lead changes in the second stanza,
five occurred in the final three minutes. A
layup by Christopher Ruff

put The Haven up by one point, 60-59, but
Clarion's Rollie Smith slid along the baseline and
into the paint for the short jumper with 11

The Bald Eagles' next possession ended in a
turnover and a foul to put Clarion on the free
throw line. Two good one-pointers by Terrance
