Highlights: California University advances to its first-ever PSAC Championship game after defeating the Bald Eagles, 5-0, on LHU’s McCollum Field in the PSAC post-season tournament semifinal round this afternoon. Junior Vulcan midfielder Tomas Boltnar (Erie/Iroquois) scored two goals and had two assists to lead the offensive onslaught and carve out a piece of PSAC history for himself in the process. His two assists today give him 19 on the season, enough to capture the conference’s single-season assists record. Now with 59 points (20g, 19a), he is also on the verge of breaking the season points mark currently at 63 and held by East Stroudsburg’s Sean Crawford (1997).

Boltnar scored just 30 seconds into the game to give California the advantage early on, getting the ball off a throw in and sneaking it into the bottom right corner of the cage past diving LHU keeper Jake Lezak (Athens/Athens).

In the 36th minute, the Vulcans were awarded a penalty kick, and Boltnar struck again for his second score of the contest. California’s Lou Douglas (Monroeville/Gateway) took a cross from Boltnar to net the third and final goal of the first half.

The open of the second half went back and forth with tough play by both keepers, but the momentum slowly swung back to the Vulcans. California broke down the Haven defense in the 73rd minute, playing the ball from Boltnar, who forced a two-on-one with LHU’s keeper Bob Mazzola (Roslyn/Abington), then passed to Nicholas Addlery (California/Jamaica Coll.) who scored on the open net. Brian Gmutsa (California/California) closed out Vulcan scoring with an unassisted goal from the upper right corner of the box in the 79th minute.

California goalkeeper Seth Shaw (Lincoln, Neb./Northeast) recorded his sixth shutout victory of the season and tallied nine saves. Lock Haven’s keepers Lezak and Mazzola split time in goal, with Lezak posting three saves and three goals against while Mazzola had four saves with just two goals against.
