Two second half goals by Bill Dovas (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) made the Bald Eagle soccer team’s game in miserable weather conditions worth it, as Lock Haven defeated Slippery Rock University, 2-0, in its final game of the season.

The Haven squad finishes up the 2002 season with an overall mark of 9-8-1 and 3-4-1 in the PSAC.  LHU staved off a potential losing season with three-straight victories to end the year and bring the team back just above the .500 mark.

Two early goals by Graham Boyle (Paisley, Scotland/Paisley) helped elevate The Haven men’s soccer team to the 3-1 victory over PSAC opponent California (Pa.) University in its home finale this afternoon.  The win puts LHU at 2-4-1 in the PSAC with one game remaining.

Boyle set the tone with just three minutes expired, finding the back of the net off an assist from Bill Dovas (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) to give LHU the 1-0 lead.  It was Boyle again in the 25th minute, scoring off a cross from Zlatko Dizdarevic (Lancaster/Mechanicsburg), to send the Bald Eagles into the break with a two-goal advantage.

In the second half, Dovas increased The Haven lead with a score following a pass from Ryan Swailes (Carlisle, England/Carlisle).  California’s lone goal was pocketed by Nicholas Addlery at 61:29, beating the LHU keeper on a penalty kick to prevent the shutout.

LHU’s Bob Mazzola (Roslyn/Abington) spent the entire 90 minutes in goal, making four saves.  California’s C.J. Cameron and Jeffrey Hoffman split time, Cameron giving up two goals with one save while Hoffman gave up one goal with four saves.

Despite a lack of an advantage in shots or corners taken, the Lock Haven men’s soccer team scored its first conference win of the year with a 2-1 victory over Bloomsburg University this afternoon on McCollum Field.  The Huskies out-shot Lock Haven, 12-8, and earned eight corner kick chances to LHU’s three which all came in the first half.

A tight first half with no scoring gave way to an intense second stanza of action.  With 15 minutes elapsed and still no score, it looked as if Bloomsburg would take the first lead of the game on a penalty kick opportunity at 31:35. Bloomsburg’s Andre Giannotti took the kick but LHU’s Paul Maguire (Great Falls, Va./St. Johns) punched the ball away to keep the score 0-0.  Just one minute later, The Haven’s Michael Skeggs (Blacktown, Australia/Evans) pushed the ball forward and sent a long ball across field to a breaking Ross Evans (Ipswich, England/Thurleston), who lifted the ball up over top the Bloomsburg keeper and into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.

Bald Eagle Christoph Paul Malek (Paderborn, Germany/Univ. of Paderborn) made good on a cross from Nick Apostolou (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) with 10:54 left on the clock, hitting the far post to give Lock Haven the 2-0 lead.

A Bloomsburg goal by Karl Lohninger on an unassisted shot from the corner of the box at 86:02 brought the game back to a one-goal differential, but The Haven held on to take the 2-1 victory.

Lock Haven keeper Paul Maguire had a big game in goal, stopping seven shots, including the penalty kick.  Bloomsburg’s Dustin Henry made four saves while allowing the two LHU goals.

The Lock Haven men’s soccer team dropped a 6-1 decision to returning PSAC champion East Stroudsburg on the road in conference action this afternoon, dropping to 6-8-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the PSAC.  Bill Dovas (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) scored the Bald Eagles’ only goal of the game in a flurry of activity in front of the goal, pocketing the unassisted shot late in the second half.

The Haven was down just one goal after a closely played first half, but the Warriors broke things wide open after netting five goals in the final stanza, including three in the first 20 minutes of the second half, to put the match out of reach.

Lock Haven’s Paul Maguire (Great Falls, Va./St. Johns) stopped six East Stroudsburg shots while allowing six goals.  The Warriors had Bill Sterner and Pete Llewllyn share time in goal.  Sterner posted four saves with zero goals against and Llewllyn entered for the final 16:40 with three saves and one goal against.

The Bald Eagles had six different players tally goals including two by Zlatko Dizdarevic (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) as they overran Mercy, out-shooting the visiting Flyers by a large 23-8 margin.  Ryan Swailes (Carlisle, England/Carlisle) opened scoring in the 16th minute with a goal off a cross from Bill Dovas (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown).  Dizdarevic notched his first score off an assist by Joe Leap (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) just over a minute later.  Dovas scored in the 29th minute, while Dizdarevic added another in the 41st minute to close out the half with a comfortable 4-0 cushion.

LHU scored three more times in the first 20 minutes of the second half with goals coming from Joe Leap, Dustin Bixler (Mechanicsburg/Redland), and Ross Evans (Ipswich, England/Thurleston).

The Bald Eagles fall to 0-3 in the PSAC after suffering a 3-0 setback against Millersville University this afternoon on McCollum Field.  Millersville controlled the tempo, taking 19 shots to Lock Haven’s nine including 10 in the first half.

Lock Haven fell behind early after Millersville’s Andy Bainbridge banged a shot into the goal after a scramble in front of the net following an MU free kick with just 5:30 expired.  The Marauders put another tally on the scoreboard just before the end of the first half, as a long fast-break ball was over-charged by the Haven keeper as A.J. Hassinger avoided the collision then booted the ball into the back of the net.   Just seven minutes into the second stanza, Rocky Panarella won the ball at midfield then charged through the middle of several Bald Eagle defenders and hit the far corner of the net to give MU the 3-0 edge.

In goal, Lock Haven’s Paul Maguire (Great Falls, Va./St. Johns) stopped five Marauder strikes while MU’s Ryan Schlegel turned away three of LHU’s nine looks on goal.

Nyack’s Nathan Rayl scored a goal in the second minute of the game, putting the Purple Pride on top, 1-0, for the entire first half.  It was not until the 70th minute of play when LHU’s Bill Dovas (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) netted the equalizer.  Dovas then assisted on the game-winner, passing to Malek for the go-ahead goal in the 79th minute of action.  Malek cushioned the one-goal advantage with another in the 86th minute off an assist from Zach Gibbon (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central).

The Bald Eagle soccer team snapped what had amounted to the program’s longest losing streak at five games with today’s 2-1 victory over the visiting Concordia University.  Two second half goals did the trick, including the game-winner by Zlatko Dizdarevic (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) in the 66th minute.

In the midst of a scramble in front of the goal, Lock Haven’s Bill Dovas (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) one-touched the ball in mid-air past the keeper and into the upper left corner of the goal for the game’s first score just under three minutes into the second half.  Concordia fought back and answered with a rocket from the edge of the box to the back corner of the net off the foot of Andre Viana to knot things up at 1-1.

Just 1:44 later, LHU pushed the ball forward on a drive initiated by David Young (Hellertown/Saucon Valley) down the left side of the field.   Young crossed to Ross Evans (Ipswich, England/Thurleston) who returned the ball left to a striking Zlatko Dizdarevic, who finished off the run with the game-winning score.

The Haven defense was able to hold off multiple attacks by Concordia in the final minutes, including strong play in goal by Paul Maguire (Great Falls, Va./St. Johns), who had five saves on the game.

Kutztown’s Shawn Rennie pocketed the game’s only goal in the seventh minute to seal the Golden Bear victory.  Lock Haven keeper Ryan Swailes (Carlisle, England/Carlisle) tallied three saves while allowing the single goal.  For Kutztown, Jon Beaumont had six saves and earned the shutout.

Late goals by the Lock Haven men’s soccer team were again not enough to grab the victory, as the Bald Eagles fell 3-2 to Geneva College this evening under the lights in Beaver Falls, Pa.

A three-goal halftime lead by Geneva proved to be the deciding factor, as the Bald Eagles had trouble making up the difference. Two goals in the waning minutes of the second half by LHU’s Bill Dovas (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown), the first off a long throw in by Zach Gibbon and the second an unassisted effort, could not patch what damage had already been done.

Haven keepers Bob Mazzola (Roslyn/Abington) and Paul Maguire (Great Falls, Va./St. Johns) split time in goal, both tallying one save.  Geneva’s Chris Roberts stopped four of LHU’s six shots on goal.

Dennis Lafferty scored the game-winner at 36:42 off a right side cross from Steven Graham.  Graham assisted Jon McGlone at 43:31 to make the advantage 2-0 to close out the first half.  In the second half, McGlone netted his second goal of the day just under five minutes from the start.  Matt Christian closed out WCU scoring in the 84th minute.

Despite both teams getting similar looks at the goal, the Bald Eagle soccer team falls to 3-3 after a 2-1 loss to Gannon University this afternoon on the road in Erie, Pa.

Both teams had taken five shots on goal at the end of the first half but a score in the 38th minute by Gannon’s Parbai Bowen gave the Golden Knights the slim advantage. Another goal in the 74th minute of play afforded Gannon a more comfortable lead, and a late goal by LHU’s Bill Dovas (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) was not enough to bridge the gap created by the two earlier Gannon scores.

Christian Caines scored twice to lead NYIT, topping off a Bear run down the left sideline with an assist from Eduardo Anacleto before pocketing his second on a breakaway through the middle, passing the ball just right of the LHU keeper and into the back of the net. The Haven men’s soccer team had few problems in their opening game in the Bald Eagle Admiral Classic this afternoon, earning the 6-0 decision versus Wilmington College.

Forward Bill Dovas (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) netted the first two goals of the contest to fire up the LHU offensive attack, and would have had a hat-trick would it not have been for the right goal post on a late shot on goal in the second half. Rookie midfielder Michael Skeggs (Blacktown, Australia/Evans) chipped in with a goal and an assist, while Zlatko Dizdarevic (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg), Andrew Beverly (Easton/Easton Area), and David Young (Hellertown/Saucon Valley) all pocketed goals of their own.

Haven keeper Bob Mazzola (Roslyn/Abington) tallied two saves and earned his first career shutout in goal. Wilmington’s Bryan Rudden stopped four Haven shot attempts while allowing in six.

In the earlier game of the Admiral Classic, Bloomsburg University defeated NYIT, 1-0.

Lock Haven's Joe Leap (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) scored in the first half to make the score 2-1 at intermission, and LHU held Felician at bay long enough to match their score in the 82nd minute with the goal by Watson.

A foul on The Haven keeper in the 97th minute gave Felician its best scoring opportunity of the overtime period, as they capitalized on the free kick to tuck away the 3-2 victory.
