LOCK HAVEN, Pa. –
Playing a man down the
final 28 minutes, the No. 25 Lock Haven University men’s
soccer team (10-4-3, 4-2-1 PSAC) slayed the No. 15
California University Vulcans (10-5-2, 6-1-1 PSAC) in
double overtime today at McCollum Field. Jon Young
(Easton, Pa./Lehigh Valley Christian), who didn’t enter
the game until the first overtime, notched the
game-winning goal.
Lock Haven came out
firing, out-shooting the Vulcans 11-4 in the first period,
but their mark was off, posting just one shot on goal.
Patrick Long (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) broke
the scoreless tie less than 10 minutes into the second
half off a direct kick.
The elation took its toll
on the LHU defense, as Pete Kariotis scored on a header to
tie it up just 40 seconds later. David Meehan (Cheltanham,
Pa./Cheltanham)
answered with 23 minutes left off a breakaway pass from
team assist-leader David Johnson (Lebanon,
Pa./Cedar Crest), his seventh help on the year.
Kariotis struck again,
knotting the score with 18:30 left in regulation. Thirty
seconds later, senior Joe Leap (Long
Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) was handed his second
yellow card and ejected from the contest, forcing LHU to
play 10-against-11.
After a scoreless
remainder of regulation and first overtime period, Young
took a pass from freshman Ashley Rosindale
(Bradford,
England/Beckfoot School)
for the game winner.
Freshman goalkeeper
Chad Feerrar (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) made
six saves to improve to 7-1. C.J. Cameron made seven stops
in the loss.
Young, Long, Meehan,
Johnson, Leap, Rosindale, Feerrar and the rest of the Bald
Eagles are back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. at
Gannon
University, their final
non-conference match of the season. |
