(Lock Haven, Pa.) ~ The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania men’s soccer team took all their confidence and a five game winning streak into their 24th appearance in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference finals, but came up a bit short, falling 3-0 to East Stroudsburg University.

The Haven was unable to get things going, as a tough Warrior defense held the Bald Eagle offense to just four shots on goal. East Stroudsburg notched two goals in the first stanza, opening play with a goal just 3:33 into the contest, a hard shot by Channing Swears that LHU keeper Manola Dorado (Mallaga, Spain) tipped but could not stop.

Later in the half, the conference leader in goals, Pat Stanco, laced his 20th goal of the season on a breakaway following a pass from Kurt Nusshag, to give the Warriors the commanding first half lead (2-0).

The bulk of the second half was a defensive battle until ESU’s Ahmet Kose drove a ground shot past Lock Haven keeper Manola Dorado for the third and final goal to put the contest, and the Bald Eagle’s hopes of winning their 16th conference championship, to rest.

The Haven defense was under constant pressure, allowing 10 cornerkicks and 16 shots on goal overall. Dorado posted seven saves in goal for Lock Haven, but was outmatched, on this day, by a relentless Warrior offense.

Lock Haven finishes the decade with three conference championships (1990, 1991, 1996) with East Stroudsburg grabbing the other seven. The win was the Warriors’ 13th in a row to take its season record to 18-2, tying the team single-season victory record (18-4, 1994).

GAME MVP* A key attribute on defense for ESU was sweeper back Sean Stewart who was awarded the game’s most valuable player.

(Lock Haven, Pa.) ~ The weather could have been nicer, but the PSAC semifinal battle between Lock Haven and Bloomsburg lived up to the expectations of thrill seekers and soccer fans brave enough to come out in the down pour that blanketed McCollum Field, as The Haven defeated the Bloomsburg Huskies by a final score of 2-1. The first half was something of a track meet, with both squads sharing time on the attack. Lock Haven had a number of shots just miss, with two shots by midfielder Rob Battison (Leicester, England/High Wyland) clanking off the goal posts, and Bloomsburg also had its share of close tries.

Just over eight minutes into the second half, with the rain coming down harder, Bloom’s Cody Clabaugh (Sinking Spring/Wilson) took a shot that deflected off a Lock Haven defender. Rocco Zinobile (Lock Haven/Lock Haven) met the rebound with a header, knocking the ball straight into the back of the net for the score and the lead. But the lead did not last long, as The Haven took off the other way and Morten Brorby (Jevnaker, Norway/Jevnaker) drew the keeper out and crossed left to Jeff Mercier (S. Rowdon, Canada/Hants West) who tapped the ball into the goal for the tying score.

Outshooting the Huskies 8-2 in the second half, Lock Haven made good on another feed by Morten Brorby. This time Brorby broke away down the left side of the field, crossing to Jon Davy (Grimsby, England/Hereford Comp.), who left his feet to meet the ball in the air and boot it into the back of the net at 67:24 to give the Bald Eagles the 2-1 advantage and the eventual win.

Haven keeper Manola Dorado (Mallaga, Spain) recorded four saves in goal, and Bloom keeper Kevin Wright (Souderton/Pennridge) notched 11 saves.

Up Next: Lock Haven will travel to the No. 1 seed East Stroudsburg University (17-2, 8-0 PSAC) for the PSAC Championship game on Sunday, November 7, at 1 p.m. This will be Lock Haven’s 24th appearance in the PSAC title game since the tournament’s inception in 1969. The Haven has won a conference leading 15 PSAC post-season tournament championships. The Warriors of East Stroudsburg are the defending conference champions, and rank second in the PSAC with 10 crowns, including six in the past seven years.
