LHU Football Announces 2002 Recruiting Class

  (Lock Haven, Pa.) -  The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania football office has announced the 34 high school seniors who will continue their academic and athletic careers as Bald Eagles.  Head Coach Mark Luther, who enters his third year at the helm of the Lock Haven program, feels the long hours he and his staff spent on the road recruiting has paid off. 
       “The strength of this group is that they are all quality students, which will help us in the long term.  We have also looked to continue to increase our size and athletic ability, especially from a quarterback and defensive back standpoint.”
      Breaking down the recruiting class, the Bald Eagles gain 14 defensive players including six linemen and four defensive backs, 17 offensive players including five running backs, six quarterbacks, and four receivers, and three kickers.

Below is a quick profile on each member of the Bald Eagle recruiting class:

Winston D. Alspaugh
6’1”  -  180  -  Carlisle, Pa./Boiling Springs HS
Position: Defensive Back
Alspaugh is an all-state defensive back who also received Mid Penn Conference MVP honors his senior year.  He nabbed Liberty Division Offensive Player of the Year accolades after making first team all-division as a running back, defensive back, punter and return specialist.  In his junior season, Alspaugh was a multiple all-conference selection, earning first team honors as a defensive back and second team honors as a wide receiver and special teams player. 

Ryan Bickel
6’3” – 240 – Morrisdale, Pa./West Branch Area HS
Position: Linebacker
Bickel is a two-time Associated Press first team all-state linebacker hailing from West Branch Area High School.  A two-year ICC first team linebacker and first team punter, Bickel also twice earned Progressland All-Star and second team Pennsylvania Football News All-Star honors as a linebacker.  An active student-athlete, he was also a three-year varsity wrestler, a four-year varsity baseball player, a member of the West Branch Area student government, and earned the President’s Award for Academic Excellence.

Andrew Breiner
5’11” – 170 – Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey High School
Position: Wide Receiver
A versatile athlete, Breiner was a two-year letterwinner for the Hershey High School football team. He was also a two-year varsity player and captain of Trojan baseball team.

Brian Camberg
6’3” – 215 – Altoona, Pa./Altoona Area High School
Position: Quarterback
Camberg made third team Associated Press Big School All-State honors, and was named a first team All-Blair County, first team all-region, and first team Allegheny Conference player.  A National Honor Society member, he was voted captain of the football team in his senior season and also earned letters in basketball, baseball and track.

Josh Day
6’2” – 285 – Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain High School
Position: Offensive Line
Day is a two-time Allegheny Football Conference Top 54 All-Star and a Lezzer Lumber Classic participant hailing from Central Mountain High School.  A four-year varsity player for the Wildcats, Day was a captain in his senior season.  

Jonathan "JD" Dettinger
5’10” – 167 – Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area High School
Position: Wide Receiver
Dettinger comes to Lock Haven after earning YAIAA First Team All-Star honors as a receiver at Red Lion High School.  He also earned team defensive all-star honors.  Dettinger was a two-year letterwinner for the Lions, and also lettered in track and field and basketball. 

Glen Dickey
5’7” – 170 – Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain High School
Position: Tailback
Local product Glen Dickey was Central Mountain High School’s 2001 Thomas E. Miller Memorial Award recipient for being the team’s Most Valuable Offensive Player.  An Express Gridiron Top 22 selection, Dickey was also a team captain during the 2001 campaign.  As a junior, he received mention as the honoree of the team’s Outstanding Defensive Back award.

Jon “Bubba” Fleming
6’3” – 160 – Ridgway, Pa./Ridgway Area High School
Position: Kicker/Punter
Fleming garnered second team all-state honors as a punter in addition to earning a Tri-County First Team selection.  Also a standout in the classroom, he was named to the All-State Academic Football Team.

Steve Frye
6’6’ – 220 – Blairsville, Pa./Derry Area High School
Position: Tight End
Frye was a three-year varsity player for Derry Area HS, and earned Keystone Conference All-Star honors as well as the Unsung Hero award from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Jonathon Grantz
6’2” – 205 – Ford City, Pa./Ford City High School
Position: Linebacker/Strong Safety
Grantz earned four letters in football at Ford City High School, nabbing first team all-conference and the team's Most Valuable Defensive Lineman honors as a defensive end following his senior season.  Also a standout track and field athlete, Grantz helped take the Saber's 4x800 meter relay squad to states as a junior.

Brady R. Grove
6’3”  -  185  -  Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area High School
Position: Wide Receiver
A member of the Wyoming Valley West Conference championship team of Williamsport Area High School, Grove was the recipient of the 2001-2002 Football Coaches Award. 

Derek Harsch
5’11” – 190 – Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area High School
Position: Fullback
Harsch, a highly decorated fullback from Wellsboro Area High School, earned several top honors following his senior season.  A District IV North All-Star, Harsch also garnered recognition as the Northern Tier League (NTL) Player of the Year, NTL Offensive Player of the Year, and Twin Tiers Player of the Year.  A multi-sport athlete, he was also a letterwinner in wrestling and baseball.

Austin Kerstetter
6’2”  -  190  -  Milton, Pa./Milton High School
Position: Kicker/Punter
Kerstetter earned honorable mention all-conference honors as a kicker for Milton High School.  A two-year letterwinner in football, he also competed three seasons in soccer and four in track and field.  In the classroom, Kerstetter is a member of the National Honor Society and the Latin Honor Society.

Greg Knauss
6’0”  -  180  -  Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland High School
Position: Kicker/Punter
Knauss was a two-time all-state selection, earning first team honors as a senior.  He also collected all-area and All-Mountain Valley Conference honors.  A versatile athlete, he was a second team all-state and all-conference baseball player.

Andre Kraybill
6’3” – 175 – Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor High School
Position: Quarterback
Kraybill comes to Lock Haven from Penn Manor High School where he was a three-year varsity quarterback for the Comets, also earning special mention as a Lancaster-Lebanon Player of the Week during his senior season.  In addition to football, Kraybill was a three-year member of the baseball team and earned one letter in basketball.

Rob Kristiniak
6’3” – 200 – Flourtown, Pa./Springfield Township High School
Position:  Quarterback
Kristiniak is an honorable mention all-state selection and a two-time Independence Football League first team quarterback.  The league’s Offensive Most Valuable Player following his senior season, he also collected Montgomery County All-Star honors and league honorable mention honors as a defensive back. A four-year letterwinner and team captain in his senior season, Kristiniak owns the Springfield Township High School touchdown record.

Vince Lynam
6’1”  -  240  -  Broomall, Pa./Archbishop Carroll High School
Position: Defensive End
Lynam gained recognition as a first team All-Philadelphia Catholic League defensive lineman and was also second team All-Delaware County.  Following his senior season, he was named to the News of Delaware County All-Star team.  

Derek Marshall
5’9” – 200 – Luthersburg, Pa./DuBois Area High School
Position: Tailback
Marshall was a two-time First Team District 9 and Tri-County All-Star tailback for the DuBois Area High School Beavers.  He lettered three times in football and also earned one letter in track and field.

Robert Marthinsen Jr.
6’0”  -  205  -  Apalachin, N.Y./ Vestal High School
Position: Linebacker
Marthinsen earned all-state honors as a third-team defensive nominee, and was First Team All-Southern Tier Athletic Conference and first team All-Metro while playing linebacker for Vestal Senior High School.  He was also a team captain and merited Ernie Davis Senior All-Star honors.  Marthinsen was also a standout wrestler for the Golden Bears, placing at the Section IV tournament and earning an All-Metro selection.  

Roger D. Masotti Jr.
6’2”  -  255  -  Tannersville, Pa./Pocono Mountain High School
Position: Offensive Line
Masotti is a two-time honorable mention Mountain Valley Conference offensive lineman from Pocono Mountain High School.  In the classroom, Masotti was named to the Who’s Who Among American Scholars list, was a Pocono Mountain Scholar-Athlete, and earned membership in the National Honor Society.

Benjamin Miller
5’9”  -  195  -  Martinsburg, Pa./Central High School
Position: Linebacker/Fullback
Miller won the Central High School Most Valuable Player award and was also named the Southern Allegheny's Football Coaches Association’s Defensive Most Valuable Player.  He was a 2001 member of the Laurel Highlands All-Conference team.  Miller has added to his football skill by obtaining a black belt in Okinawa Kenpo Karate.  Academic awards include membership in the National Honor Society and the Central Scholar-Athlete award.

Kyle Miller
5’11’ – 175 – Halifax, Pa./ Halifax Area High School
Position: Quarterback/Defensive Back
Miller is a three-year varsity player for Halifax Area High School, captaining the Wildcats football team during his senior season.  An honor roll student, he also lettered twice in baseball. 

Aaron Nicklas
5’11’ – 252 – St. Marys, Pa./ St. Marys Area High School
Position: Defensive Line
Nicklas was a Big 30 All-Star as well as the St. Marys Area Lineman of the Year following his senior season. A Tri-County and District Nine All-Star, Nicklas also earned his team’s Leadership Award.  In addition to football, he lettered in golf and track and field.

Adam Nyman
6’2”  -  185  -  Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle Area High School
Position: Defensive Back
A Big 8 Conference first team running back, Nyman also scored honorable mention honors as a linebacker for Bald Eagle Area High School.  Also a three-year wrestling letterwinner, Nyman is a two-time district place winner and is also a four-event district place winner on the track.  

Merlin Oxenreider
5’9” – 195 – Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser High School
Position: Full Back
Oxenreider is an all-league fullback hailing from Conrad Weiser High School.  He led the team in rushing and scoring as a junior and senior and was second on the team in receiving yardage following his senior season.

Jason K. Scott
6’4”  -  250  -  Linden, Pa./Williamsport Area High School
Position: Defensive End
A three-year starter and team captain for Williamsport Area High School, Scott was a two-time All-Northeast Pennsylvania Football Conference center, earning first team recognition following his senior season.  Additional honors include an All-District Four first team selection, Williamsport Sun-Gazette All-Star honors, and a nomination to the 2002 East-West All-Star game. 

Mike Slatcoff
6’2” – 185 – Sandy Lake, Pa./Cochranton High School
Position: Linebacker
Slatcoff was voted as Cochranton High School’s Most Valuable Player, was a team captain, and was an all-conference tailback and linebacker in his senior season.  He also earned all-conference honors as a linebacker in his junior year.  Slatcoff also lettered in baseball for four seasons, earning two all-conference awards as an outfielder. 

Brad Sones
6’2” – 225 – Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia High School
Position: Defensive End
Sones was an Associated Press Small School First Team defensive end and also earned All-Anthracite All-Star, All-Central Susquehanna Conference, and District IV First Team honors.  Following his senior season, he was named as the team’s Defensive Most Valuable Player and Outstanding Defensive Lineman.  As a senior, Sones helped lead the Southern Columbia High School Tigers to the CSC-II, District IV, and Eastern PIAA Championships. 

Matthew Stadulis
6’0” – 220 – Willow Grove, Pa./ Upper Moreland High School
Position: Fullback
Stadulis was a first team all-league player at inside linebacker, and also earned recognition as a Montgomery County All-Star. He was a team captain and nabbed Upper Moreland High School’s Defensive Most Valuable Player award following his senior season.  In addition to football, Stadulis was a two-year letterwinner in both lacrosse and track and field.

Joel E. Stoneberg
6’1” – 185 – New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock High School
Position: Defensive Back/Punter
Stoneberg was named to the York Area Interscholastic Athletic Association (YAIAA) Coaches All-Star squad as a first team defensive back.  He earned the Susquehannock High School Unsung Hero and Iron Man awards, and also set the record for the most interceptions in school history.  Stoneberg is also a standout baseball player and wrestler for the Warriors.

Steve Szobocsan
6’2”  -  270  -  Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown  High School
Position: Defensive Line
A Gridiron Greats regional standout, Szobocsan was a two-time Lancaster-Lebanon League All-Star and a War of the Roses All-Star while playing for Elizabethtown High School.  He was also a three-year varsity wrestler, a two-year track and field letterwinner, and earned membership in the National Honor Society.

Matt Tischbein
5’10” – 165 – Hershey, Pa./Hershey High School
Position: Quarterback
Tischbein is a three-year varsity quarterback from Hershey High School.  He also lettered twice in basketball for the Trojans.
 

Troy Wile  Jr.
6’0”  -  190  -  Fayetteville, Pa./Chambersburg Area High School
Position: Quarterback
Wile earned Chambersburg Public Opinion First Team Offensive recognition as a senior and second-team honors as a junior and sophomore.  He was voted Best Offensive Player by his team, and also garnered the Most Improved Award.

Jamie Wright
6’0”  -  196  -  Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land High School
Position: Defensive Back
Wright was a two-time Mid-Penn Conference All-Star and earned mention among the Gridiron Greats.  A team captain in his senior season, he was an East vs. West Big 33 All-Star Football Classic participant.  Wright lettered an additional four years in baseball, also gaining all-conference recognition in that sport.
