Bald Eagles Top Alumni, 21-20, in 2002 Crimson and White Scrimmage

Over 70 LHU Football alumni returned to Hubert Jack Stadium for the 2002 Crimson and White Scrimmage

(Lock Haven, Pa.) -  The Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania football team topped the Bald Eagle Alumni team, 21-20, in the annual Crimson and White Scrimmage held this afternoon at Hubert Jack Stadium.
The Bald Eagle squad hit paydirt first, as quarterback Tim Storino (Pittsburgh/Bethel Park) and receiver John Caldwell (Virginia Beach, Va./Fork Union Military Academy) connected from 20 yards out.  Sophomore Mark Barns (Bloomsburg/Bloomsburg) cleared the uprights for the extra point to give the Bald Eagles the 7-0 edge.  At 10:42 in the second, Robert Carey (North Braddock/Woodland Hills) intercepted a pass attempt by Bob McLaughlin ('95) and weaved his way through traffic for a 72-yard return for touchdown.  Again, the point after attempt by Barns was good, putting Lock Haven ahead of the Alumni, 14-0.
The Alumni defense jumpstarted the team of former players, however, set off by a 23-yard interception return for touchdown by Dave Laudeman ('91) with just 52 seconds remaining in the half.  After the halftime rest, McLaughlin connected with Matt Kerstetter ('00) for a 23-yard pick up to the Bald Eagles' 13-yard line on a fourth down situation to keep the Alumni team alive.  Two plays later, McLaughlin again found Kerstetter, this time for a six-yard touchdown pass.  After a good two-point conversion play between the same two players, the Alumni had tied the game at 14-14.
Jason Kundtz ('99) gave the Alumni team its only lead of the contest late in the fourth quarter, reeling in a 23-yard pass from McLaughlin to make the score 20-14 in favor of the former Haven players with 2:00 left in the ball game.
Back on the offensive, the current Bald Eagles promptly executed a successful two-minute drill, as Storino completed a pass to Scott Anderson (Cortland, Ohio/Lakeview).  Anderson outran the opponents for the clutch 75-yard touchdown reception with 1:24 remaining on the clock.  The point after kick by Barns was good, giving the Bald Eagles the 21-20 lead.
The Alumni squad threatened and came within one yard in the final minute but could not pull off the upset, as LHU's all-time passing leader Bob McLaughlin sent the ball deep to march the Alumni down the field.  In his last play from scrimmage, McLaughlin completed a pass to Lester Smeal ('89) at the one-yard line as time expired.
