Under the guidance of third-year head coach Kelley Green, the
Lady Eagle softball team has begun to hit its stride, going from 16-21 in 2001
to 34-11 this season. Lock Haven
set a new school record for wins, and at the end of the regular season, has
also established five other single-season marks, including at-bats (1,144),
doubles (57), runs (207), RBI (167), and stolen bases (92).
The Haven has a mixture of talent drawing from both veteran and young
players – the starting lineup consists of two seniors, three juniors, a
sophomore, and three freshmen. The
pitching staff draws from both ends of the experience spectrum, with one senior
and two freshmen doing the work from the pitcher’s circle.
This year’s pitching rotation has recorded a combined ERA of 2.09,
down considerably from last year’s final 3.36 ERA.
Rookie hurler Molly Shuey (Tower City/Williams Valley) leads the
team with a 1.57 ERA along with a 12-2 record. Shuey has five shutouts to her
ledger, and is second on the squad with 58 strikeouts.
Senior hurler Michelle Boone (Philadelphia/Phila. HS For Girls)
boasts a career-low 2.02 ERA and has recorded a 12-5 mark.
She leads the team with 107.1 innings pitched, three saves, and 60
strikeouts. Another freshman, Kelly
Deitrick (Danville/Danville), has a 10-3 mark with a 2.09 ERA.
Second baseman Lynnette Murray (Williamsport/S. Williamsport) has
blazed the trail to the PSAC tournament for the Lady Eagles, leading the way
with a .434 batting average on 63 hits including 15 doubles, four home runs,
and 36 RBI. Murray set new school marks for at-bats (145) and stolen
bases (35), and is one or two away from setting new records in several other
offensive categories.
Guarding
the hot corner is sophomore Jocelyn Tutrani (Royersford/Spring-Ford),
who hits .308 and has seven doubles along with three home runs to her credit.
Tutrani currently leads LHU in assists with 97 total.
Moving over to short stop is senior Kim Tonsch (Falls Creek/Brockway
Area). Tonsch has 90 assists
and is hitting .238 including six doubles and one home run.
Four-year starting first baseman Tara Trabosh (Pottsville/Pottsville
Area) continues to provide solid support to the Lady Eagle defense and
offense. In 306 fielding attempts
this season, Trabosh has recorded no errors along with a team-best 291 putouts.
She is hitting .288, is leading the team with three triples, and is
second on the team with seven doubles, three home runs, and 27 RBI.
Lock Haven has a freshman, Janet Paterson (Frederick,
Md./Walkersville), behind the plate. Paterson
has started in 39 of 40 contests played, averaging .296 swinging the bat with
seven doubles, one home run, and 21 RBI.
The Lady Eagle outfield is young, with freshmen holding down two out of
three starting positions. The lone
veteran is left fielder Kristen Tome (Warren/Warren Area).
Tome is fourth on the team with a .306 batting average that includes
three doubles along with 10 RBI. Rookie
centerfielder Lynn Spiezio (Trooper/Methacton) is second on the team in
hitting with a .360 BA, and next to Murray, is the quickest Lady Eagle on the
basepaths with 21 stolen bases. In
right field is freshman Kristin Frantz (Boyertown/Boyertown). Frantz
hits .248 and has three doubles and two triples along with 11 stolen bases on
the books.
