(Lock
Haven, Pa.) - In
the second-straight one-point decision, it was the Alumni squad sneaking past
the current Bald Eagle unit, 14-13, in the 2003 Lock Haven University Spring
Football Game. Former quarterback Carlos
Cleckley (’98) guided the Alumni throwing for 89 yards and one touchdown
on the game. Two interceptions by the Alumni defense were also key, the first
setting up the squad for the eventual touchdown drive and the second halting a
promising Bald Eagle scoring drive in the final minute of the game. Last year,
the Bald Eagles defeated the Alumni, 21-20, in the Spring Game.
The Bald Eagles were the first to score, opening their drive from the
Alumni 46-yard line. A series of
rushing attempts by Maurice Walker (N. Braddock/Woodland Hills) brought
them closer before a 34-yard touchdown completion to Rafael Smith
(Pittsburgh/Woodland Hills) was called back due to a penalty. Moved back to
the 39-yard line, the Bald Eagles’ Tim Storino (Pittsburgh/Bethel Park)
opted to go with the long pass again and this time Rob Carey (N.
Braddock/Woodland Hills) came down with the ball in the back corner of the
endzone for the score. The extra point kick by Austin Kerstetter
(Milton/Milton) was good, giving the Bald Eagles the 7-0 lead with 9:52
remaining in the first quarter.
The LHU Alumni dominated the second quarter, gaining possession on an
interception by Dave Laudeman (’91) which put the ball on their own 27
yard line to open the drive with just over 14 minutes remaining in the half.
A 21-yard connection between Cleckley and Jason Kundtz (’99)
brought the Alumni to within 21 yards of the endzone.
A pair of passes to James Freeman (’90) added 15 yards before
the final four-yard push by former running back A.J. Anderson (’99) up
the middle for the score. On the point after play, Cleckley looked for his
receivers but would end up slipping into the endzone himself to score the extra
two tallies and give the Alumni the 8-7 lead.
The Alumni scored on their next drive as well, taking over on offense at
the Bald Eagles’ 34-yard line. It took Cleckley and Kundtz only two tries to
connect for the touchdown as Kundtz reeled in the 34-yarder with 3:52 left in
the half. The point after attempt failed but the Alumni still held the
14-7 lead heading into intermission.
Into the second half, the Alumni team drove deep into the redzone but
were turned away after Bald Eagle defensive back Winston Alspaugh
(Carlisle/Boiling Springs) intercepted a pass in the endzone. Chelstan
Anderson (Halifax/Halifax) broke loose for a combined rushing gain of 22
yards on two plays and one 15-yard reception during the drive, but it was Rob
Carey’s 30-yard saunter through Alumni territory that ultimately set up the
Bald Eagle touchdown. Carey took the ball on third down and one and swept to
the left. Finding no room to maneuver, he shook off several defenders to work
back over to the right side of the field then on down the sideline before being
stopped short at the six-yard line. A penalty moved the ball back five yards
before quarterback Troy Wile, Jr. (Fayetteville/Chambersburg) handed off
to red-shirt freshman Derek Marshall (Luthersburg/DuBois Area). Marshall
split the defenders for the 11-yard touchdown scamper through the middle at
6:30 in the fourth quarter. Going for two points, the Bald Eagle pass was
batted down by Roy Warlow (’01), to prevent a lead change.
As time in the fourth quarter began to fade, the Bald Eagles were on the
move again, regaining possession and driving towards the endzone before an
interception at the 19-yard line by Ted Egger (’00) with just 37
seconds remaining sealed the Alumni victory.
