(San Diego, Calif.) – The Lock Haven
University of Pennsylvania women's volleyball team opened up the
2001 season at the UC San Diego Invitational, compiling a 1-3
record over the two days of competition. Individual match
capsules follow:

(San Diego, Calif.) - The Lady Eagle
volleyball team earned its first win of the season in the final
contest of the UC San Diego Invitational late Saturday evening,
soundly defeating Cal. State-Dominquez Hills, 30-22, 30-20,
30-17.
Outside
hitter Lauren Nuzum (Manchester/Northeastern) led the
way, posting team highs of 12 kills, 13 digs, and three service
aces. Teammate Kelli Crouch (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley) shared
the team lead for kills, talling 12 along with seven digs.
Setter Shana Fessette (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown Central)
helped pilot the offense, recording 35 assists in addition
to five kills of her own. At the net, middle Beth Hackenberg
(Maumee, Ohio/Springfield) had five blocks, including one
solo. Kara Warnke (Aurora, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and Amanda
Snyder (Portsmouth, Va./Churchland) contributed four and
three blocks, respectively.
“It
feels good to get in that first win — hopefully it will give
us some momentum going into the Northwood tournament next
weekend,” said LHU Head Coach Tom Justice.
LHU’s
senior opposite hitter Kelli Crouch was selected to the
All-Tournament Team.

(San Diego, Calif.) - Head Coach Tom Justice
noted some definite improvements in the Lady Eagle volleyball
team’s performance this afternoon at the UC San Diego
Invitational, but it was not enough to get by No. 9 ranked Cal
State San Bernardino as his squad fell in three games, 23-20,
23-30, 30-32.
The
Lady Eagles were ahead in the early portion of game three, but
Cal State San Bernardino rallied to tie the score at 28-28. Two
unforced errors (a service error and reception error) at the
close of the game gave San Bernardino the win. Kelli
Crouch (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley) paced Lock Haven
with 17 kills and 14 digs. Kara Warnke (Aurora, Ohio/Walsh
Jesuit), Lauren Nuzum (Manchester/Northeastern), and Beth
Hackenberg (Maumee, Ohio/Springfield) each contributed
six kills apiece.
“Though
the final scores didn’t go the way we would have liked, I
think we ended the match on a positive note,” said Justice.
“Cal State San Bernardino is one of the best teams here at the
tournament, and we were right there with them.”

(San Diego, Calif.) - Lock Haven’s women’s
volleyball team matched up with the host team in the second
round of the UC San Diego Invitational on Friday evening,
falling in three games, 17-30, 18-30, 26-30. Despite a dismal
team hitting percentage of .115, offensive highlights were
generated from the play of sophomore middle Kara Warnke
(Aurora, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) and senior opposite Kelli
Crouch (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley). Each Lady Eagle
contributed 12 kills on the match to lead the offensive attack. Shana
Fessette (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Beekmantown Central) was
consistent from the setter’s position, posting 38 assists
along with eight digs. Defensively, Crouch paced the squad with
13 digs, while Warnke and Lauren Nuzum
(Manchester/Northeastern) each added seven digs.

(San Diego, Calif.) - The Lady Eagle
volleyball team opened up the 2001 campaign against a
traditionally dominant and No. 6 ranked (AVCA Division II
Coaches Top 25 Preseason Poll) California State-Los Angeles,
falling in straight sets, 27-30, 29-31, 22-30. Three Haven
netters tallied double figures on the attack paced by senior
outside hitter Lauren Nuzum’s (Manchester/Northeastern) 11
kills. Senior opposite hitter Kelli Crouch
(Lancaster/Conestoga Valley) and sophomore middle Kara
Warnke (Aurora, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) both recorded 10
kills apiece. Senior setter Shana Fessette (Plattsburgh,
N.Y./Beekmantown Central) posted a total of 35 assists,
while defensive help came from Crouch (12 digs), Nuzum (10
digs), and sophomore middle Beth Hackenberg (Maumee,
Ohio/Springfield) (4 blocks).
“We
are experimenting with a lot of things right now. We have a new
look and have people in different positions,” said LHU’s
11th year head coach Tom Justice. “They did some great things,
and I feel positive about our performance — hopefully we can
build on that. The team is excited to be here, making
adjustments where needed, and functioning well.”
