(Lock
Haven, Pa.) - The #11 Lock Haven Bald Eagle Wrestling team will travel to Lehigh University for the Sheridan Duals this Saturday, Dec. 8, in Stabler Arena. LHU will open the day against Ohio University at 10 a.m., followed by Rider University at 12 p.m. The final match of the day will be against Rutgers University, scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
Lock Haven holds a 3-2 advantage in all-time duals against Ohio University, winning the last three including 2001’s 27-14 victory.
The Bald Eagles hold a commanding 14-2 series advantage over Rider University. The two teams met last year at the Virginia Duals, with LHU taking the 23-12 victory in the quarterfinals on the way to earning the team title.
Lock Haven defeated Rutgers by a score of 29-10 back in 1992, the only past meeting between the two squads.

Below is a weight-by-weight preview:
125: Taking the mat at 125 pounds will be either Trap McCormack (Loganton/Bald Eagle
Nittany) or Dave Predko (Ridgway/Ridgway). McCormack, #18-ranked, is 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in dual meet action after pinning Eastern Michigan’s Josh Gunterman in 3:54 last Saturday. Predko could also step in, carrying a 4-4 record this season.
Ohio will utilize Mike Caruso (3-2), who finished fourth at Mat-Town including a 7-5 decision over Predko in the tournament’s first round. Rider will put forward senior Jerold Limongelli (2-2). Limongelli and McCormack matched up last season, with McCormack taking an 8-5 decision. Rutgers sophomore Andrew Uhrlass (2-5) is the probable starter here at 125 pounds.
133: Bald Eagle senior #18 Chris Spealler (Paoli/Great Valley) or sophomore Victor Jackson (Hampton, Va./Poquoson) will challenge for the win at 133 pounds. Spealler is 5-2 overall after posting a 5-3 decision over EMU’s Zach
Pyles. Jackson is 10-4 following most recent competition at the Penn State Open.
Ohio’s Anthony Carrizales will accept the challenge here. Spealler and Carrizales met up in the consolation bracket at Mat-Town, with Spealler taking the 5-2 decision. Carrizales defeated Jackson, however, in sudden victory (F, 6:36), also at Mat-Town.
Wrestling for Rider will be junior Dave Santamaria (3-3), and Jon Rodriguez (5-4) will vie for the team points for the Scarlet Knights.
141: Two strong Haven grapplers will look to improve their records at 141 pounds and help LHU to the victory, #5 Mike Maney (Clarence/Bald Eagle Area) and Justin Owens (Morrisdale/West Branch). Maney is 4-0 overall and could be ready to compete after taking two weeks off following Mat-Town. Owens is 4-2 overall, and has already faced one probable opponent, Ohio’s Jon Spires. The two met twice at Mat-Town, Spires winning both by a pair of identical 11-6 decisions.
Ohio’s Jon Spires (7-3) is the likely candidate to take the mat at 141 pounds this weekend. For Rider it will be either junior Michael Harris (3-2) or freshman Mike Robinson (0-2), and Rutgers’ Ken Rodriguez (2-5) is also a probable starter.
149: Perhaps LHU’s strongest weight class at the moment is 149 pounds, where All-American JaMarr Billman (Easton/Easton Area) resides along with his talented understudy James LaValle (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park). Billman is ranked #2 in the nation and is 9-0 overall, last competing at the Mat-Town tournament. LaValle improved to 8-3 with a 14-3 major decision over Eastern Michigan’s Eric Fairbanks last Saturday.
Highly touted Ohio freshman #15 Jake Percival (8-1) will wrestle here. Billman handed the rookie Bobcat his only loss of the season, defeating him, 14-10, in the finals at Mat-Town. Percival defeated
LaValle, 8-4, in the tournament’s semifinals. Rider’s Nick Harrington (5-1) and Billman are already familiar opponents, meeting in last year’s dual with Billman emerging the 16-5 winner. For Rutgers, sophomore Greg Austin is the probable starter after building an impressive 11-2 overall mark so far this season.
157: LHU’s Jason Gilligan (Brookville/Brookville) upped his overall record to 5-1after last week’s 9-4 decision over EMU’s Derrick
Keasley.
Gilligan will face Ohio’s Ryan Smith (9-2) in a rematch of the Mat-Town finals in which Smith took a 10-4 victory. Gilligan’s weekend doesn’t get any easier after that, as he will most likely face Rider’s #14 Derek Jenkins (3-3) along with Chris Ressa (2-2) of Rutgers.
165: The Haven’s mainstay at 165 pounds is sophomore Charlie Brenneman
(Hollidaysburg/ Hollidaysburg), who defeated Eastern Michigan’s Brett Filmore, 8-6, last Saturday to improve to 3-4 on the season. Brenneman is liable to match-up against Ohio’s Ed Willis again after registering a victory over the Bobcat 5-4 in a tiebreaker in the Mat-Town quarterfinals.
Willis (3-4) is one of two probable starters for Ohio, the other being freshman Tony DeAnna (2-5). Rider will put forward junior Cory DeBias (1-4), and Rutgers will utilize senior Bryon Lauer (5-4).
174: Ed Pawlak (Lakewood, N.Y./Southwestern) and Eric O’Connor (Elizabethtown/Elizabethtown) will handle responsibilities for the Bald Eagles at 174 pounds. Pawlak is 2-3 after last competing at the Mat-Town tournament, and O’Connor improved his overall tally to 4-3 after a 4-2 decision over EMU’s Adam Gilmore last Saturday.
Ohio will use a pair of 174-pounders this weekend, Luke Moore (6-2) and Travis Smith (4-4). Moore defeated O’Connor, 11-3, in the opening round of Mat-Town. Rider’s #20 Nick Catone (4-1) and Rutgers’ Justin Haskins (5-3) will also offer the Bald Eagles top level competition this weekend.
184: Lock Haven’s Josh Millard (Mill Hall/Bald Eagle Area) and Mike Greenberg (Canton/Canton) share the duties at 184 pounds. Millard is now 3-3, posting his second major decision of the year with a 14-3 victory over EMU’s Dane
Bonnigson. Greenberg filled in for LHU at 197 pounds against Eastern Michigan, dropping to 2-2 after a 9-1 loss to Travis Kraft.
Ohio’s Mark Shrout (3-2) will take the mat for the Bobcats. Millard and Greenberg will also be challenged by Bob Pizzuto (3-2) of Rider and #16 Tom Tanis (0-1) of Rutgers.
197: Avery Zerkle (Urbana, Ohio/Graham) is projected to start at 197 pounds for the Bald Eagles after taking time off to heal an ailing knee. Zerkle is currently 2-1 overall.
Ohio has a pair of wrestlers at its disposal at 197 pounds, freshman Joel Weimer (4-4) and another freshman, Matt Reed (0-2). Rider’s Greg Sawyer (2-2) is the predicted grappler for the
Broncs, and John Foscolo(0-3) will be their Rutgers’ opponent.
HWT: The Bald Eagles’ Tim Boetsch (Lincolnville, Maine/Camden Rockport) and Brett Kleckner (Beech Creek/Central Mountain) are probable starters at heavyweight. Boetsch pocketed his first victory of the season with a 6-3 win over Kenny Leckrone of Eastern Michigan last Saturday, improving to 1-3 on the year. Kleckner most recently went 0-1 at the Penn State Open, and is also 1-3 on the season.
Ohio freshman Jeremiah Beltran (7-5) has been a stable addition to the Bobcat lineup. Beltran defeated
Kleckner, 3-2, in the first consolation round at Mat-Town earlier this season. Rider will use Vinny D’Agustino (3-3), and Rutgers’ junior Frank Sabatino (3-3) will most likely handle the duties at heavyweight for the Scarlet Knights.
UP NEXT: The Bald Eagles travel to Clarion University next weekend, Dec. 16, for the Clarion Duals. LHU is scheduled to wrestle Pitt-Johnstown (1 p.m.), Kent State University (3 p.m.), and #7 Ohio State University (5 p.m.).
