Two Bald Eagle Gridders On Football Gazette All-America Team

(Lock Haven, Pa.) -  Rob Carey (North Braddock, Pa./Woodland Hills) and Derrik Metz (Roaring Spring/Central), both of the Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania football team, were selected to the 2002 Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-America Team.  Carey earned Second Team Defensive honors as a return specialist, while Metz gathered Honorable Mention honors as a linebacker.
Junior Rob Carey notched second team All-America honors as a return specialist.  He was a unanimous selection as a Football Gazette First Team All-Northeast Region return specialist and also earned first team honors as a defensive back.  Additionally, Carey was a D2Football.com Honorable Mention All-American as a defensive back and was selected as an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) All-Star return specialist.  The versatile Bald Eagle also earned First Team All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) honors this season in both positions.  Carey was the second-leading punt returner in the conference and 11th in the nation, averaging 15.8 yards per return.  He returned punts all the way back for touchdowns in back-to-back games versus Mansfield and Cheyney Universities.  At season’s end, he finished sixth in the PSAC with a 22.6-yard kick return average.  Defensively, Carey was third on the squad with 73 total tackles.  He led LHU with 10 pass break-ups, had three interceptions, and tallied four tackles for loss (-14 yds). Carey set a new school record with a 99-yard fumble recovery and return for score in the Bald Eagles’ 26-13 win over Shippensburg University.
During the course of the 2002 season, Carey had also been honored by D2Football.com as the Defensive Player of the Week (10/20/02) and as a Special Teams Honorable Mention (9/15/02).  He garnered Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette Tri-National Defensive Player of the Week  (10/20) honors as well.
Derrik Metz, a junior linebacker, received honorable mention All-America honors after posting his best season yet at The Haven.  He was selected for All-PSAC West honors for the first time in his Haven career, earning designation as a First Team honoree.  Metz is the first LHU defender to post a 100-tackle season since 1995, registering 118 total stops including 83 solo stuffs.  His total tackle mark ranked him 15th and his solo tackle statistics ranked him third in NCAA Division II. He also recorded 13.5 tackles for loss, shared the team lead with four interceptions, had one forced fumble and three sacks.  During the course of the season, Metz was selected as PSAC West Defensive Player of the Week (9/29) and as the ECAC Defensive Player of the Week (10/1).
This marked the 15th year Don Hansen’s Football Gazette has selected an NCAA Division II All-America team.  The national publication also selected All-Region teams for the first time in 2002 with the first-team and second-team All-Region players from each of four regions (Northeast, South, Midwest, West) making up the national ballot voted upon by a 21-member national panel.  This year, a total of 134 players from 69 schools earned some form of Football Gazette All-America honors.  The full All-America list can be located at www.donhansen.com .
